Howdy you'all and "Happy Holidays" for whichever belief you have!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(It is Christmas and a prospoures New Year for my families)

Just was reading the article in Guns and Ammo about ""Low-Recoil Loads" and was wanting to know at what point can we load down a cartidge to still get a good "fire-formed" case?
When starting with new brass I will work up a load towards the bottom end of a "recipe" in a load book. This is still a shoulder pounder if you go out to knock out 50 to 100 rounds. (not a pussy, these are usually belted mags not ny 22-250 or 243)
After reading the article I was thinking these reduced loads would work well if they reach the needed pressure to achive a good seal and push the shoulder up into the chamber. They would also be a good way to save on powder.

Thanks,
Smedley

PS What does the "Dacron" do in the bore? (by this I mean will it foul the barrel faster or is it negligable??)

to get a good fireformed case you need at least 45,000 PSI, which means your loads can't really be reduced ones.

like the man said, you need pressure to fireform or you can create a short case. if you have access to an old PO Ackely book he goes into the details. i once fireformed with corn meal and a twist of paper, over a powder charge of course. read it in an old Handloader mag. works great but you have to watch the pressure. i used it to form 8mm Rem mag from 300 h&h. i don't recollect any other details. today i would stick to just a normal load with a cheap bulletn seated into the lands. just don't burn out the barrel fireforming too many too quickly

Ditto's,

Reduced loads are not suitable for fire-forming, but they sure are fun Big Grin I generally prefer to use my older brass for reduced loads.

If you oil the case it will fireform at lower pressure. This also avoids case stretch marks.
Good luck!
