How many times have you been out coyote calling, deer hunting, and found lots of cottontail rabbits or grey squierrls just sitting around,(thoughts of tasty meals). You want some meat on the table, but don't want all the noise from shooting your 22-250 or other favorite 22cal case scaring everything. Yes, I have shot hundreds of cottontail/squierrls with a 22-250,(35gr Vmax at 3800fps, coyote load, before I found out this trick). You can head shoot them, just don't hit the body(instant fur rainbow and wasted game). Why not try this, take a fired case from your favorite 22 caliber,Make sure it chambers easley, neck size about 1/8" of the neck, drill out the primer pocket to accept a win 209 shotgun primer, then make a L shaped piece of rod small enough to fit thru the 209 sized primer pocket and small enough to fit into the 22 cal neck, make the long end of this L shaped rod to fit the base hole/shape of any 22 cal pellet(air gun)will also work for 17 cal,20 and 25 cal bore sizes I have found and used. Try several different brands of pellets(some are more accurate than others) your weapon will tell you. Take a pellet and push it even with the case neck, and then put the shotgun primer in the case. Fire/test several times untill you have the best accuracy possible from your weapon. The L shaped rod also pushes out the fired primer. At my reasonable chosen distance(25yds)for head shots only, yours may be different, shoot enough to learn the trajectory of your pellet load from your weapon with the high power load that it's sighted in for. Get a small plastic bullet box(works perfect), fill with primers and pellets and L shaped rod, stick into pocket or vest and when the little rabbits are just sitting there daring you, blast them with the pellet load, very quite, accurate and deadley. you can make up several cases and have them preloaded and ready. Works for other vermin, like starlings/sparrows in the dogfood dish etc. Have taught several kids/adults to shoot this way, and I enjoy using this load in taking out the jack rabbit infestation in the local ball park(can't use 22rf) houses all the way around, the sheriff's office was advised and gave the go ahead after seeing what was used, the city population of pigeons get their fair share sniping also. Also try this(higher vel, for you go faster shooters)take a fired case and fill the case with melted lead(wheel weights), drill a 1/8" hole thru the center of case and fit shotgun primer, vel. of 600fps from my 22-250,222 etc. DON'T even think of adding any powder, blows holes thru pellet and leaves them stuck in the barrel, this will cause a big problem,a word to the wise. Thank you,Don.

quote:Hey Don, I've not tried the 209Primers for this, but I have used Standard and Magnum Primers to fire Pellets back when I was messing with 22Hornets. I agree that adding Powder can "blow through" the Pellet if you get too much. My pellet load consisted of less than 1gr of a Pistol Powder and a Standard Primer. If you can find "Promethius" Pellets, they are made with a synthetic skirt and holdup better to the slightly higher pressure.

I like to get the back of the bullet to touch the front of the primer in lite load experiments for high velocity and low noise [or crush the 1/2 gr of Bullseye if there is any]. I like to use lead bullets, soft balls are best. I like to get the bullet starting at the lands. Alex has some products that a big help getting close to that, and the quality is high and prices are low: http://alexcartridge.com/
