I am using a 280 gr. Gas Checked bullet, with 21 gr's of 5744 powder with a large rifle primer. When I shoot a load through my gun ( Winchester 1894 .380 bore, 26" Oct. barrel, made 1904) there is lots of unburned powder in the barrel. What are your thoughts on using a magnum primer instead of large rifle?? Would it burn more of the powder?? Merry Christmas to everyone, and thanks for replying!! Some powders leave more unburned than others. 2400 for example leaves a lot of it and Unique seems to burn clean.

I'm not sure that a mag. primer will help much, but 4 to 5 more grains of 5744 might. Not knowing the exact condition of your rifle I advise to proceed with caution.A faster powder for your reduced load can also do the trick. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Increase your load of 5744 while comparing it to the published loads until you reach maximum or the powder burns cleaner. In my experience SR4759 burns cleaner at about the same charge weights. It is also about the same burning rate.

Merry Christmas and thank you all who have replied so far. I forgot to mention that my load 21 grs of 5744 shoots less than a 1" group at 50 yds open sights. Shoots 1.5" groups at 100 yds. Any more suggestion's or help will be appreciated. Please reply or e-mail me at jerry.kazee@yahoo.com The Senator Life Member NRA Life Member CA Rifle & Pistol Assoc.
