I'm trying to develope one load in 308 winchester/ 7.62. This load will feed
1. m1-a
2. 2 remington pss
3. 2 scout rifles.
4. ruger bolt action

It will be used for informal taget practice. Plinking and hunting. Hunting will be primarily for small south texas White tail and hogs. The hogs weigh up to 300 lbs. I would want it to have adequate pentration to break both shoulders on a large hog. ( I don't know if that is possible with a 150 grain bullet).

I want it to basicly match military ball ammo so I can use the irons on the M1-a.
I have a life time supply of processed brass so I just need to settle on a bullet. It has to be cheap enough to buy in bulk ie: 1000 per year so that it doesn't amount to a mortgage payment.

What are your recommendations. Thanks for the responses

150gr Sierra GameKings with 46gr of Varget.

165gr Sierra GameKings with 44gr of Varget.

One of these will do the job. See what shoots best in your battery of rifles.

Try these loads. As always start a couple of grains lower and work up. However these are not hot loads.

With 150 grain bullets try @42 gr of IMR 3031.
This load hits right with Military ball in my H&K 91 and M1-A's.

For bigger game just use the 150 Nosler Partition.

However, my all time favorite load in the 308 is a 165/168 gr bullet over 39.5gr of IMR 3031.

I used the Sierra Matchking for paper. I used the 165 gr Sierra HPBT Gameking for deer, pigs and antelope.
For bigger game or raking shots on big pigs I used the 165 Nosler Partition.

I also shot some deer and antelope with the 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

This load has always shot good in EVERY 308 from a lever action Savage 99, hunting bolt actions, "Sniper" rifles, target rifles, and in para-military rifles such as the H&K 91, M1-A, M1 308 Garands and FN-Fal's.

There are a lot of newer great powders on the market, but this load has always done an excellent job.

It is an oldie, but a goodie.

thanks for the responses . I think that I will order a thousand of the 165 bthps and give them a try.

I have had good luck with 165 grain Remington Core-lokt bullets purchased in bulk. They have worked well in my M-1, M-1A, and the price can't be beat. IMR 3031, 4895, maybe 4064, and Varget would be good powders to start with.

I always heard "the" powder for military 308 target loads was 4895. Talking in the older days. Being that is a current surplus powder on the market it can be picked up cheap. One of my favorite powders in a lot of different calibers.

I have killed several deer [mostly whitetail, but a few muleys too], several pigs, several antelope and a few turkeys with that load of IMR 3031 and the Seirra 165 HPBT Gameking.

It has always done an excellent job. It never failed to feed in any of the para-military rifles I used it in.
