Just got some 308 dies,For my new 1953 m70 featherwieght

What powders do you like for the 308 with 165/ 180 gr bullets?

Something a little faster than h4350? Noticed the books showed 4350 a compressed load. How about R15?

Im comparing to my 3006 loads and what works best in the smaller volume 308 case?

Rick

RE15 is the best place to start for these weight bullets, if it(RE15)don't work, nothing will, same basic powder Federal uses in their Match rounds(168-175). AWESOME powder. Jay

Bill what velocity are you getting? I find XMR-4064 to be a little slow.

I'm averaging about 2650 fps. I'm not trying to hod rod but striving for the best accuracy.

That's not the first group I have shot like that even tho I wish they were always that way. This year I am working on more 200 to 300 yard shoting.

It seem to shoot better at 200 yards than at 100. Go figure.

Here's the first time I tried it. I was shooting at this little dot at 200 yards. the first 2 shots were touching and forgetting I had a great group going, I was trying to hit the dot. so using Kentucky elevation and windage (I was already aiming about 6 inches to the left due to the wind) I did hit it the dot. Then it dawned on me that I missed up a good group.

my model 70 featherweight is a nut for blc(2) w/mag fed match primers.this gun shoots over 1 moa w/other powders but gets right down to .5 w/the 48 grns of blc(2)under a 150 grn hornady interlock. first rifle i've had that shows a marked powder preference over a bullet type.

in other .308 rifles i've done well with R15 and IMR 4064.

I've used: IMR-4064,RL-15,Varget,N-140 and WW-748 in 308's with great success with all. If I had to choose only 1 I'd probably use 748 since it runs through a powder measure like water and I shoot a lot of 308.......DJ

I tried 43grs of XMR-4064 with a 168gr Hornady Fed case Win primer, I only got 2400fps, IMR should of got me to 2650. I will try 45grs and see what happens.

In that particular 308 (the CZ) I was looking for accuracy, not velocity. One thing I liked was that 165 grain Gamekings shoot to the same POI.

Oh, and I use Winchester primers.

Hey BillMC is that CZ 308 a long action with a spacer in the magazine and a spacer on the bolt ?????, like a pre 64 m70 or is it just the same as a 06 magazine.
My pre 64 has a has a magazine spacer and I have to seat my bullets way in to fit the magazine and then they are .060,.070+ from the lands. Terrible situmacation....

Since I own no M70 pre or otherwise, I'm not sure how to answer.

However, here's some measurements

On my CZ, using the Stony Point bushing, it's 2.292 from the casehead to the lands. I'm loading to 2.222 (casehead to datum) with Nosler 168 HPBTs. That seems to be the sweet spot in "this rifle."

Using my caliper, the inside of my magazine measures 2.884. My OAL is 2.819.

There's no spacer in my mag. But I beleive the all the 550s are long action. The 527s are short action.

In my Tikka 595 I use AR2208(VARGET) for 150gr and up projectiles. For the lighter 130gr I use AR2206(3031) and get great results.
