I've got a Rem 700 in 6/284 using the long action(as well as a standard 284 in Encore). If I were to build a 284 from scratch using the 700 action it would be the standard version not the short. The magazxine box is just too short in the latter to take full advantage of the powder space, particularly when using heavier bullets. Thus the bullet has to be seated very deep to fit the mag. The 284 is a wonderful cartridge, well ahead of it's time. The primary reason why it drifted into obsurity is becsue Wincheter introduced as a semi auto (Model 100) and pump (both in a short action)and had to, therefore, keep the pressure down. This caused it to achieve less than expected performance. Another reason it didn't gain public acceptance, was because it was introduced at a time when bolt actions were just taking off. It was competing with the 270, 280 and 7mm rem mag in bolt versions and couldn't keep up as an auto.

Cossack, doyou have 6.5 or 6mm 284 and if you where going to have a gun made it sounds like the 284 over the 7-08 but the 6.5-284 sounds like fun to shoot but I would like to shoot the .284 cal better for bigger deer I,am a .284 fan any way. what are the ballistic's for the 284 if you have a Bolt gun and not a lever or auto gun

looking at some brass the other day, it looked like the 284 case is about 1/4" longer than the 308 case. I don't see the advantage of this round unless put into a short action

Sometime back in the 60's didn't Winchester make a 7mm cartridge based on the 308 case. I seem to remember Win. developing a "family" of new cartridges based on the .308. Like the .243, .308, .358 and a 284. But I can't find any reference to this. Maybe someone can help.

thanks

Winchester's .284 was not made on the .308 case, rather it is its own unique case.

Short action. The .284 is about the same length as a .308 and has the same head size. The rim is rebated for more powder room.

See Jerry/ AK 's post or refer to Ackley. The .284 Winchester is not a .308 with the rim rebated.

Working from memory here: the rim diameter of the .284 Win. is .473"...same as the rim on the .308 Win.. But the "head" diameter, i.e. the dimension at the beginning of the extraction groove, is .500" on the .284 while it is still .473" on the .308. The .284 Win. was the original "short, fat" case long before the WSM's, though the WSM's are fatter yet. The .284 case capacity is very near the same as the '06 case, short by maybe 3 grains of water (66 grains vs. 69 grains).

Actually, the .284 case length is 2.170" and COL of 2.800" and the .308 case is 2.015 abd COL of 2.750". It is meant for short actions.

I did see a Savage 99 in .284 once but unfortunately, I was too broke at the time to scarf it up.
