Anybody here ever work with a Savage .22 Hi Power? I recently picked up one (an 1899-H takedown with a crisp, shiny bore)and am accumulating components to load for it.

My questions are:
A)loading info (I don't own any old manuals that contain this info. Late ones no longer list this round.
B)General advise/pitfalls to avoid
C)use of .25/35 brass and/or .30/30. Ream necks of .30/30 brass after sizing? (I'm guessing probably)
D)Bullet source other than Hornady for .227-.228 diameter bullets?

Thanks in advance. Gary

Norma make brass in .22 Savage: http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=795501

Hornady #5 lists max loads for their 70 gr bullet as: IMR4198 23.1 gr; RE7 23.6 gr; IMR3031 27.4 gr.

The 22savage hi power was orginally based off the 25-35 win brass, and norma still loads for it to my best knowledge. Here are some loads. IMR4895-27grs,55grbullet=2870fps. IMR3031-30grs,55grbullet=3260. H380-29grs,55grbullet=3200fps. R1-7-23grs,70grbullet=2900. IMR4198-23grs,70gr bullet=3000fps.IMR3031-27.o grs,70grbullet=3100fps. At his moment,i don,t know of anybody else whom makes bullets. If i were you,i would retire it,but thats your choice. hope i helped. van

The cartridge is also known as the 5.6x52R. It is still loaded and used in European countries and Vithavouri, Norma ect will have data for it in their manuals. I believe the bullet is a .228" diameter in stead of the common .224" we load in 22 cal centerfires here.

Hector,

How is the .22 High Power project? I have a Savage 99 like yours, and a stock of assorted S&B and Norma ammo. Collected the 0.228 Hornaday bullets, but have never gotten around to handloading it.

Cheaper Than Dirt has Sellier and Bellot ammo with .227 70 grain bullets for about $12.00 a box. They shoot very well in my 20" Savage 99 Takedown.
Hornady has a .227 70 grain bullet available from Midway.

Good luck
Big Chet
