I have a large supply of military 308 brass, I just bought a 7mm-08. I tried to run them into the 7mm-08 sizing die out of 5 cases, 1 necked down, 4 folded. I have a neck turner if I can figure out how to squezze down the necks.

any suggestions??? I use Imperial wax for this trial, as I make 35 Whelens from 30/06, & 416 taylors from 338 Win Mag. wiyh it?

Strange. I've made a lot of 7-08 cases from 1x GI brass. I don't know about Imperial Wax, I used plain old RCBS lube and made sure the neck was well lubed, inside and out. As well as the case. Are you using a F/L die or a neck die?

Make certain your expander is tapered. That, along with adequate lube, is the key. With that being said, it's a simple, one-step pass through the die to form 7-08 from .308 brass. I've formed many of these along with a ton of 6.5x.308 (before the days of the .260).

Lube well but not exdessively. A slowish, steady push on the handle is preferrable. Done dozens with no problems.

I have reformed a bunch of ex-mil brass to 7mm-08 and I used the standard RCBS resizing die with no problems! I used RCBS resizing lube!

As a suggestion, you might try deburring the outside of the necks! It might help, and it won't hurt anything!

Do you know if the brass has been reloaded before? Just a thought, but perhaps the brass in the necks has work hardened?

The only time I've reworked military brass was to make .300 Savage cases- basically just pushing the shoulder back. I'm not sure its necessary, but I always anneal after running it through the Savage sizing die.

One of my friends does this often, and he uses these steps, don't know if it really matters, but he says he rarely squashes a case.

1.Tumbles brass well
2. resize in 7-08 die without expander.
3. chamfer inside of case mouth well.
4. brush inside of all case necks.
5. resize with expander present.

He exclusively uses Imperial die wax for lube.

Just FYI, Good Luck--Don

I make tons of brass for the 260 out of 7/08 and 308 brass....

I just like Winchester Brass over Remington... however, I also like Nickel brass, so I neck down Remington 308 Nickel brass to 260....

I always do it in a 2 step stage, but then I resize a lot of my brass this way....causes fewer problems and it makes a stuck case easier to remove when they pop up...

I take the expander plunger out of the die and then resize the cases....

Then I resize them again with the expander plunger back in the die... It works best when you are necking down a case...

I have never had a neck collapse doing it that way...... and I am talking thousands of times of doing it!

good luck,
seafire
cheers

I ve done this with Lapua .308 new brass using Lee lubricant, and standard Lee FL die in one go to 7-08, no problems at all.

Try putting your brass in water just below the shoulder. Heat the brass with a blow torch until it is glowing red. This is called anealing. I makes the brass solf and supple not hard and brittle. The brass used in LC brass is very good but needs to be annealed. There is a great difference in LC Match brass and machinegun brass. I make .243, .260, 7-MM08 and .358 brass from 7.62 X 52 Nato all the time. Infact I set up a dillion press with a 308 decapping resizing die in the first station. I put a 7MM-08 resizing die in the second station, .260 resizing die in the third station and a .243 die in the fourth station. It works like a charm.
