I'm just now getting into loading my 50-460 (510 Wells). Has anyone tried using 750 GN 50 BMG bullets in their 500 A-2 or similar? Loaded rounds are probably too long for the magazine but might be OK loaded individually at the range. How about accuracy, penetration, etc.? Could the tips be cut off to reduce weight and get loaded rounds to feed from the magazine? Thanks again.

I've been wondering about this too. Anybody with experience?

Both Ron Barry and Roger Rothchild have been doing it. They report fine accuracy, and ~2200 fps. Ron had his chamber cut with a longer throat to allow the bullets seated out a bit, not sure about Roger's chamber. I'm having my 500 Jeffrey cut with a long throat as well to play with the big pills. Not a bad deal, 3/4 the velocity of a 50 BMG burning 1/2 the powder, and a gun weighing 1/3 as much.

750 A-Max's work fine in a 500 A-2 throated for them. They are far too long to feed from the magazine but work fine single loaded. I've gotten over 2250fps from mine. A favorite load is 55grs of XMP-5744 and the 750 A-max. It's designed to be slow and low recoil, but knocks things over in a very satifying manner.-Rob

Anyone, After throating for the 750 gr. SPBT, how is the accuracy with the standard 570-600 grain projectiles? -Catter ------------------

Fla3006 and 'Catter, I have a real long throat (0.800") in my .500 A-Sq. and I do not see a problem with anything I have shot yet. I have used the 575gr cast, gas-checked bullets with XMR-5744 (35 grains) for 1050fps and I amazed myself by shooting a hole almost perfectly round. Once I had my Burris 1x Scout scope dialed in the bullets always hit 2.5" above the crosshairs at 100yd. I know this is impractical in such a heavy gun but what-the-hey I have fun. I use the light 610 grain APIT's I get from Hi-Tech Ammo. I can squosh 110 grains of RL-15 in there and accuracy is good enough to scare you. When you consider the surplus bullets cost .30 cents each and there is a whole variety available, it makes sense to have fun with them. I load by pushing the cartridge base into the magazine and sliding the bolt over the base to allow the extractor to get over the rim. You will have fun. For the heavy bullets I would use a slower burning powder. Max in my rifle 113grains RL-15 and 600grain bullet so 611 grain APIT with 110 grains RL-15 is max for this kid. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Roger Rothschild (edited 02-15-2002).]
