Can someone give me the original load details for this caliber, ie weight of bullet, grains of black powder used, velocity. This is a 3-1/4" case. A friend has such a rifle and wants to load for it but I have no answers for him. The markings on the gun say 4 drams powder but nothing else! What is the conversion for drams to grains? Any help appreciated! [This message has been edited by John S (edited 02-20-2002).]

A conversion table can be found on my pages in Table #3. ------------------

Thanks! I also did some reading last night and came up with data, courtesy of "Pondoro" Taylor in his classic book about cartridges.

John: Tell your friend to find a copy of Ross Seyfried's very instructive article on the .450 BPE in the July 2000 issue of Rifle magazine, issue No. 190. For what it is worth, I just had a Ruger No. 1 .458 reamed to .450 BPE/NE 3.25. Using Federal 215 primer, Bertram case, 120 grains G-O FFg under a Wonderwad and veggie wad and capped with a 480-grain cast lead bullet, I got 1396 fps out of that short 24-inch barrel. Very pleasant load to shoot, too.
