Does anyone have any experience using these bullets in .308 Win or 300 Win Mag Loads? I hunt primarily Michigan whitetails but may be going Moose hunting in Newfoundland this fall. I want an accurate bullet that will hold up on the heavy bone of moose.

I don't have any firsthand experience with them, but my first inclination is that for deer you'll be fine. For moose, I'd move up to the Nosler Partition, Swift A-Frame, etc. Plenty accurate, and they'll get you the penetration that you want on a moose.

I've seriously considered this bullet in my .308 for deer; I'll probably have a shootoff between it and the 165 Hornady SST for top honors.

However, for moose or elk, I'd use a premium 180 grain or heavier bullet. There are many good ones; Nosler Partition or Partition Gold, Swift A-Frame, Winchester Fail-Safe, Barnes-X, Northfork, and so on. The extra cost of a premium is worth it on big critters and when traveling to hunt.

All the best,
BigIron

I'd agree with Big Iron, 165 gr for whitetails and 180 for moose, however in a 300 winmag I'd be tempted to go with a 200 gr bullet but the 180 would work fine.

No idea where your coming from, Number 1. the gameking is not a hollow point. It is a lead pointed boat tail, which is designed to give you maximum expansion when you are loading it for white tail deer. I have knocked down deer with it from 75yds. to 150yds. If you want the best specs. on it why not go to http://sierra.com And find out or call 1-800-223-8799 I'm Quite sure the tech's will give the information you need to you in a few seconds. luck hotdog

Actually, they do in fact make a HPBT Gameking. Item #2140.

They describe it as slightly tougher than the SBT Gameking--slower, less violent expansion, more penetration. They recommend a max muzzle velocity of 3000 fps for the SBT and 3200 for the HPBT for hunting.

It should do fine for deer, but for moose I'd want a heavier controlled expansion bullet.

They do make a 165 grain BTHP GameKing. I load and shoot them all of the time. I have had excellent luck with them and even though I haven't shot anything very large with them, I don't see why they wouldn't work.

Shoot the 165 HPBT at Deer, but NOT at Moose.

At 308 winchester velocities the 165HPBT is a great bullet for deer and would work on moose if good shots are taken. I would be inclined though to go with a premium type bullet in the same weight for moose. SpeerGS, nosler partition etc.
I've used the 165HPBT out of a 30/40 Krag on some mule deer and it worked real well. Velocities at the muzzle around 2650. Regards, Bill.

I used the 165 hpbt gameking this past year on a nice blacktail buck out of my 300 win. No complaints in the least, complete penitration and out the far shoulder. A couple years ago I used a 180 spbt gameking on a decent 5x6 bull elk, complete penetration and out the shoulder at around 150 yards with my 300 win leaving the barrel at 3150.
I don't kill hundereds of game animals a year, but I fill the tags I get. The only bullets I've really had over expansion problems with are the ballistic tips. I honestly feel the normal hunting bullets; interlocks, sierras, speers, corlock type bullets work alot better then they are given credit for. I've killed three diffent elk with nosler partitions and they worked fine, but I don't think there is anything earth shatering about them. For years the only bullet weatherby loaded there ammo with was the interlocks, and yes they work fine. There really is not a real practical difference in the performance between sierra and hornady, if you think there is shoot some media with both then pipe off.

First of all thanks for all the replies. This is a great site. I already have some loads worked up in my 300wm that shoot .5 in grps with 165g speer grand slams. Ill try to work some up in 180s and see if they shoot accurately also. I am going to try the 165 Sierra HPBT gamekings and some 165 Hornady SST's in the 308 and see which shoots best. This year I shot 2 Caribou with 130 xbts in the 308. Excellant results. DOA. Never Happy LOL

I loaded some of the 160 gr HPBT Gamekings last year in my Rem 7 mag and they shot great... .75" 5 shot groups at 120 yds. On the buck I shot though, they just didn't open up much, exit holes weren't much bigger than the entrance, 5 through the lungs and ribs in a softball sized area, first shot at 200+ yds and the next 4 over a 300 yd path as I followed him down to a finishing shot.I would think they'd be the ticket for heavier animals, just not the pick of the litter on deer. Good luck.
