I need opinions on terminal performance of these three bullets;

Nosler BT
Sierra Gamekings
Hornady SST

Rifle: Remington BDL .270W

Quarry: Deer-Sized Game

Max distance: 250 yards

I'm looking for accuracy and excellent terminal performance...

What's your favorite bullet and load?

BTW, its nice to join you all again...

WOODS, DOC, GERRY, "MUNSTA" and everyone else can you refresh my memory....

The time has FINALLY come!!!

Aloha,

Roland

Hey LB

Bout time you got around to reloading Big Grin finish up with all that goat and boar hunting and painting rifles!

My favorite bullet is the Nosler Accubond which comes in 140 grains for the 270. It will have the same ballistic coefficient as the Nosler Ballistic Tip and will retain the same weight as the Nosler Partition. It is the second most accurate bullet I have found. The most accurate bullet in the 270's I load for has been the Barnes Triple Shock in either the 130 or 140 gr.

About 57 gr IMR4350 and the 130 gr TSX bullet works pretty good

IMR4831 works pretty good with the 140 gr bullet.

My “go to†deer rifle is a Mdl 70 in .270 Win. I have had excellent results in accuracy and performance on deer with the Sierra Game King 130gr. using a near max. load of H4831SC.

Best of luck and shoot safe.

strangely I had very good success with the SST last year.....bullets performed admirably.

I used them because I had them...if I hadn't my go to bullet is Hornadys interlock for deer.

Any of the bonded bullets are fine too but more than needed.

Get yourself some Speer 130 grain sp's. For deer, there's nothing better.

Roland-

Any of the 3 will do just fine are have been designed for just what you have in mind. Choose the one that shoots the most accurately in your rifle and never look back.

Bobby speaks the truth.

The terminal performance of any of the three will be satisfactory on deer-sized game.

Any one of the three MAY exhibit the best accuracy in YOUR rifle. The Nosler Ballistic Tip may edge the Sierra just slightly in average accuracy, and the Hornady will typically lag a bit behind. But let me repeat, any of the three may be the best shooter in your particular gun.

Thanks to all who have responded....

I would like to try for starters just as you both have said...

After reading a lot of material last night I will try the Nosler BT, Sierra GameKing, and the Hornady SST in that order...

I'm looking for a bullet that will do exactly what these were designed to do on the type of quarry I am after...

I appreciate everyone's reply because it helps me determine which direction I want to go! Big Grin

Thank you,

Roland

Roland,

since you are hunting Hawaii, and the deer etc are not that big.. and the combo is quite capable of taking down a Hog....

Think outside of the box for a moment...

Looking at a 130, 140 or 150 grain Ballistic Tip.. if you look at the trajectory charts in a reload manual.. when zeroed 3.5 inches high at 100 yds, any of these bullets traveling with an MV of only 2250 fps, will be dead on at 200 yds, and about 3.5 inches low at 240 to 250 yds...

Even tho one can easily handle the recoil of a 270, this MV will reduce recoil by about 50%... which will easily aid in learning good shot placement...

A ballistic tip at these velocities will also penetrate quite a bit even on large, tough animals....even more than a partition will at those velocities...

As far as terminal performance potential... a few years ago, I took a cow elk in Montana, with an 06 with a 165 grain Ballistic Tip... she was at a dead gallops, broadside from me at 175 yds.... MV of that load was 2250 fps...

when hit, she was like I had missed her completely....

however, I had confidence in both the load and the bullet... she galloped about 60 yds or so and collapsed...

on field cleaning the animal, the bullet was stuck under the hide on the far side...

it was hit on the right side, behind the shoulder...

there was a quarter sized hole when it entered the right side, passing into the right lung...

it exited the right lung, and an area about the size of my fist was turned into hamburger..

it cut the esophagus in two,

entered the left lung with damage about 1.5 times the size of my fist, going in.. again making it look like hamburger...

it went thru the left lung completely, but stopped underneath the hide..

it also cut off the top of the liver...

the far left side of the left lung and the upper half of the liver, more resembled a bowl of spaghetti, over looking like a bowl of hamburger meat....

It shows how tough this elk was, to make it 60 yds with that kind of internal damage.....

She was hung at the check in station by Montana F& W... they told me from analysis of a tooth sample, that she was 11 yrs old at the time.. and weighed approximately 650 lbs on the hoof...

I can recommend a couple of different loads for ya to give an MV of say 2400 fps in your 270, that will all be very accurate, and dramatically reduced recoil...

As I preach, why do we all think we need a 500 yd load, with a 3500 fps MV and a 3500 Ftlb of energy to take a deer or so, at 50 to 150 yds?

I guess the real proof in the pudding so to speak is to test some loads out on some trees at 100 yds or so, say 8 inches to 10 inches in diameter...

A slower moving ballistic tip, will actually outpenetrate a faster moving premium bullet...

I am sure many people will defile my name for that statement....

but anyone who has actually tested it, shut up when they saw the results...

watching test results with no anticipated expectations is how I learned all about it...

real world personal experience.. instead of being an armchair ballistician...

I prefer Sierra bullets. In my experience they are usually more accurate than other brands. Sierra tech support is second to none and I like to support their company.

I have a box of Hornady SST 130grn and no matter what I try I can not get them to group. The Sierra Gamekings on the other hand will group 1- 1.5" at 200 yards. I like the Sierra bullets for deer and hogs.

I love the .270Win, and to tell the truth, I think you have to try hard to come up with a load that won't work well. That said, I don't like to pay for premium bullets if I don't need them, and for whitetail, hogs, etc., I use the tried and proven 130 gr. Winchester Power Point. It's cheap, and does a great job at 2800fps.

Try seating the SST further out, and slowing them down a grain or two.

TB,

I might try working up a slower load?? Kind of goes against the go faster mentality, but if that what it takes. I set the bullets out farther than the GK. I will sit them closer to the lands and see what I can do. Otherwise I guess they will go on ebay or trade to someone else.

Good old fashioned Hornady 130gr flat-base Interlocks and 60gr of H4831SC.

Or

Good old fashioned 150gr Nosler Partitions and 58.5gr H4831SC.
