Reloading Data for 6.5x54M.S.

My 6.5x54 M.S. is coming.
Im looking for brass in Australia.
Also for reloading dies and reloading data.
Preferably Hodgens or ADA powders.
Aussie reloaders can you help?

Welcome Mate! Nice Classic Caliber.

Reload data is available in the Hodgdon, and Hornady Load manuals.

If you can't locate some, then starting load data for a 6.5 x 55 or a 260 Remington will suffice. Then you can work up.

Enjoy that classic Rifle.

This assumption of yours is not correct and could indeed be *very* dangerous. A look into the published sources will show why.

The CIP has purposely set the pressure for the 6,5x54 MS quite low; for a reason I suppose. What you have just contemplated would be loads *starting* already at over maximum. Not good.

My best reload for a Mannlincher-Schoena�er Model 1903, with 18" barrel and Lymann Aniversary 4x40 is this:
Cases N (dominion) berdan primer RWS 5608; Reloader 19 # 42 grs.; Hornady 160 grs. RNSP with O.A.L. 2,976" (75,60 mm), Vel. average five shots: 2.198 fts - 1.716 fts/lbs. Five shots at 150 meters in 1,500".
Other: cases RWS boxer type; Federal 210; Hodgon 414 # 41 grs.; Hornady 160 grs. RNSP with O.A.L. 3,071" (78,00 mm), five shots at 150 mts. in 2,500"
Both reloads are sure in my rifles. Please begining with 10% low.

Hector,
When you hunt with a great rifle like the 6.5 x 54, then that makes your language EXCELLENT, no matter what dialect you are speaking.

You become a class guy with a class rifle.

Here I prepare you what I do with a Mannlicher Shoenauer 6,5 x 54 from 1903.
I explain this so you can see that my gun is not a extremely strong one and I maintain the loads in the light side.
Try also to enter a forum about mannlicher were someone describe what hapends to him with a bad bullet election.

For my use I stay with 39 gr of IMR 4350 and 160 gr Hdy bullets.
All the loads are accurate for hunting use.
Aproach each load starting 10 % lower.

It might be of interest for others, so I might as well answer here. Excuse my slightly slipshod style.

The 6,5x54 MS has its CIP pressure set at 3650 bar piezo (3200 bar copper crusher), while the 6,5x55 Swedish Mauser is set at 3800 bar piezo (3300 bar copper crusher), and the .260 Rem at 4150 bar piezo (no copper crusher data available to me).

In the "blue" reloading bible (RWS/DNAG/RUAG handbook), you will find almost every 6,5x54 MS maximum load at or even below the 6,5x55 minimum load, with exactly the same bullets and propellants (!). That's a relation to ponder on.

So, using a minimum load of the 6,5x55 (or even, heaven forfend, of the smaller but much hotter .260 Rem) as a starting point for the 6,5x54 MS seems rather unsafe to me.

Those manuals are not widely distributed in No America.

Starting loads for the 6.5 x 55 and the 260 are close.
Only max loads are of course not realistic for the 6.5 x 54.

However, according to load manuals over here, the 6.5 x 54 loads are different I guess.

In the Sierra latest addition manual, I will use the data for IMR 4064 powder, which is a mid range powder. I apologize of not knowing a European equivalent. I will use a 140 grain bullet as the 160 is not listed for all three cartridges.

Max load for the 6.5 x 54 is 36.7 grains for a velocity of 2400fps.

for the 260 Rem,. max load is 37.1 grains for a velocity of 2600 fps.

for the 6.5 x 55, the max load is 40 grains for a velocity of 2700 fps.

starting loads for the same cartridges in the same manual are as follows

6.5 x 54, starting load of 28.7 grains for a velocity of 1900 fps.

260 Rem, starting load is 32.0 grains for a velocity of 2300 fps.

6.5 x 55 , starting load is 34.1 grains for a velocity of 2400 fps.

Pressures are not listed, but the rifles used are as follows

6.5 x 54: Custom Mauser

260 Rem: Savage 12VSS

6.5 x 55: Model 96 Mauser

That is the prospective from this side of the Atlantic.
