I load for a number of calibers
including .221 Fireball, .223,
and .243.

I note that all three of these
calibers have short necks on the
cases.

While I certainly do not need it,
I have considered getting another
rifle in .222, noting that this
cartridge has a considerably longer
neck in comparison. It also has
a well known reputation for accuracy.

Is there a concrete connection between
longer case necks and accuracy ?

Being a retired biology teacher and
having absolutely no physics training,
it would seem to me that a longer
cartridge neck would give better support
or alignment to any bullet prior to
pulling the trigger.

Am I nuts ?

Thanks, "Bo"

Don`t really know if neck lenght has any effect on accuracy, but I have read Nosler uses the 223 for all their .224 cal bullet quality control testing in the lab............

I really don't believe it. I've had six in a row extremely accurate .223 rifles and believe that for varmint/hunting rifles this case neck length is more emotional than real.

No absolute connection. You only need enough neck to completely support and grip the bullet you are using.
