I've tried the search function and got a bunch of data on 22's and 250 grain bullets, but not what I'm looking for. I have a 22,250 barrel on the way and want to know what the "go to" powder is for a 22.250 using 50 - 55 grain bullets? What's the powder that you would start loading with if you had to start all over again?

H-380 works for me.

H -380, Varget, 4895, staRT LOW W/ ABOUT 36 GRS. AND WORK UP.. DOCSTONE

The best accuracy I have ever obtained with my .22-250 , repeatable 3/4" 5 shot groups, was using Winchester 760 under a Nosler 55 grain ballistic tip. IMR 4064, under any of the many 50 grain bullets I have tried, has also shown enough accuracy to be deadly on coyotes out to the far side of 300 yards.

I have found the best consistency and accuracy with all bullet weights for me was IMR 4198. Not much data for it anymore, but at 25 grains with a 55 grain and 50 grain bullet, it gives me one hole at 100 yds,



Velocity is not at the top, but plenty good enough. around 3400 fps.



Honorable mention is H 4895 at 32.5 grains with a 55 grain bullet also. Also honorable with all bullet weights is RL 7.



Both have been more accurate than the Varget or the H 380 loads, and believe me I am a BIG fan of H 380.

Varget!

When I get my hands on a new 22-250 the powder I always try first is H 4895.

I would start with Varget/RL-15 and also try H-380.

H4895 and Varget rule my shelves. However, with the .22-250 I get higher velocity with varget and I'm able to fill the case more.

You might get a pleasant surprise with 34.5 gr. IMR7383 and a Magnum primer.Not super fast but it'll reach out a long way, or try Seafire's Blue Dot routeroger

H380 first in my opinion, but must try varget and H4895 due to the temperature insensitivity.

I have IMR4064 and IMR 4895 to try and will have to look at my can of 7383 (that's not one I would have thought of!). I guess a trip to the store is on for some H380 and maybe Varget (I've been wanting to try that anyway).

When ever someone asks me to accurize or develop an accuracy load for their 22-250, the load that I use is 40.0 grains of IMR 4350, WW cases and CCI BR primers. The load seems to work equally well for 50 and 55 grain Sierra and Nosler. I found this load in an OLD reloading book and through the years that I have shot this load it has shown to be equal to or better than anything else for accuracy.

It is not going to be the fastest load. If you want to go fast use something else. What this load will give you is a very smooth pressure curve (single based powder) and I have never seen any excessive pressure signs in any 22-250 tried. I can't prove it but I think my barrels are lasting longer using this load.

Loading it in cases that haven't been fire formed can be frustrating. I have found if you "dribble" the powder in a circular motion into the funnel, the granules of powder tend to orient themselves in the case and you can get all the powder in. After fire forming things are a bit easier.

Try it, you'll like it.

H-380 or H-380 either one will do!!!!!!

H-380 was made for the .22-250. I think Varget was indirectly made for the .22-250. I use varget for its temperature insensitivity design. Varget works really damn good in my 24" varmint special. I get 3630 at 80 degrees with 35.5gr and a Hornady 55gr FMJBT.
