QuickLoad data for .300H&H?

I'd like to ask for some help!

I'm about to work up a load for my .300H&H. It's a Winchester M70 Classic with a 24" Krieger barrel.

I plan on using Norma's 200gr Oryx bullets in Norma cases (87.5gr water capacity) trimmed to 2.836" length. COAL of 3.6" gives me about 20 thousands of an inch of "bullet jump" with the Oryx bullets.

Now, my problem is that there is not a lot of load data out there for the .300H&H and the data I find is rather diverging, stating max velocities of between 2700 FPS and 2950 FPS for a 200 gr bullet using similar powders and barrel length. As I am a cautious man I have so far refrained from trying to reach much higher than 2750 FPS but I am intrigued to find out if there is more to be had without playing it unsafe.

I have good acces to Norma and Wihtavuori powders, as I live in Scandinavia, but I can probably also find most of the more common Hodgedon and IMR powders if need be.

Could any one help me find a short list of powders likely to give me top velocities at safe safe pressures? Most importantly could I have some directions as to what the true max velocities are likely to be?

I am not a beginner when it comes to hand loading so I know I need to start low and work up my loads looking out for pressure signs and so on.

Thanks! I owe you a beer!

Hi,
In order to accurately assess what your rifle is capable of handling, you need to provide your current load and chronographed velocity. This way QL can be calibrated to be far closer to your real world ballistics.
QL defaults are often way out!
Post your actual figures and we can be more accurate.
I hope this helps,
Pete

Thanks every one!

I did not know QuickLoad could be calibrated using actual loads and velocities from you gun. Interesting!

I loaded up some rounds today and went to the range. 65 gr of Norma MRP gave an average velocity of about 2710 FPS (2690 - 2730). 66.5 gr of Norma MRP gave an average velocity of 2760 (2736 - 2785). No signs of excessive pressure.
I am not really happy about the extreme spread of the velocities but the 66.5 gr load gave me a five shot group of about .65 MOA. Not sure if I should blame my RCBS Charge master och my Shooting Chrony chronograph for the varying velocities.

I guess I'll keep working towards 70 gr of MRP and see when pressure starts to show. Or I could also just be happy with the 66.5 gr load and go hunting.

Thanks again every one! I very much appreciate your help!
I might just have to buy me a copy of QuickLoad, just not sure I am computer literate enough to use it...

4831 will give you everything the MRP/Rl22 will.
7828 is also good. If you cannot find one of those 4 powders do well, something's wrong.
Just try them, and see which works best.
I am not a fan of 200grain myself.
Try some 180 Sierra Prohunters.

You can also use 300 WSM load data. The cases have the same capacity.

If you are getting .6" groups at the 2700 fps level I would not obsess over more velocity. My old M70 with its 26" bbl seems to prefer loads a bit below maximum. The animals do not notice the difference.

7828 is also good. If you cannot find one of those 4 powders do well, something's wrong.
Just try them, and see which works best.
I am not a fan of 200grain myself.
Try some 180 Sierra Prohunters.

70 grains H4831 and a 200-grain Speer accounted for my first kudu. Like you, I've settled on 180-grainers after deciding the 200's were too hot in my 721. (I prefer the 4831's, but he's in Sweden and RL-22/MRP acts quite the same.)
