Back when I was doing a bit of reenactment I used a 50/50 mix of black and Red Dot. I'd fill the case close to full, compress the powder, and topped it off with a compressed cardboard wad. A bit of silicone sealer swabbed on the wad and the case mouth held it all in place. The Red Dot/black mix is cleaner burning than straight black, still plenty of smoke and boom.

Don't know much about blank loads, but I have a couple of the red plastic cases for wax loads. I guess these are the movie loads for practicing "quick-draw" in front of a mirror...?
