While at a gun show yesterday, I heard that Winchester was dropping W-760. Anyone else heard anything? Also, something unusual. I bought an 8 pound keg of W-760, and I had to give my drivers licesne, phone # and I think he just about wanted to know how many hairs were on my butt. If I hadn't needed the powder, I'd have told him where to get off. I wonder. Is big brother starting to register powder purchases in a back door way? Anybody hear anything about this? There was even one where the ammo companies may stp selling to us citizens due to liability concerns. All kinds of joyful comments. Things sure seem to be going all to hell in the shooting world especially if there is any truth in these. Paul B.

I know California ask for thumb prints to buy ammo, my father lives there.During my last visit I was buying some ammo (LA County) and they asked for a Driver license and thumb print, I told them where to go. Welcome to the "People's republic of California".
I live in Phoenix and I have never had to give that much info?
The only thing they ask for here is the money. I read somewhere last month that Winchester was streamlining their powder line. I do know they are keeping 748.

I live in California and I have never had to give my thumb print to buy ammo (yet). I know things are getting bad here but they're not that bad yet. It may be a local requirement, but not widespread. I live in Sacramento, and we have to give our Drivers licence number and state that we are using it for reloading, but in neighboring counties it is not required.
Bigdog. I'm in Tucson. It sure surprised me when they did that. I've bought powder and ammo from them before and they've never done that before. I sure hope they don't discontinue 760. I use that in about 8 different rounds. I heard about WMR being discontinued, and was lucky enough to chase down 15 pounds of the stuff. Don't know what I'm gonna do when it runs out though. Guess I'd better chase down a couple more 8 pound kegs of 760, just to be on the safe side. Paul B.

It IS a local thing in California. Sacramento does have the requirement of drivers license and a few other things. Neighboring municipalities in the same metropolitan area, or different adjoining counties may not have it. The more left wing counties are imposing restrictions on the amount of powder retailers can store in one place. Retailers are therefore starting to be reluctant to handle powder as the amounts can be limiting to as low as 50# in one location. Doesn't enable them to carry much variety or much stock. Hodgdon 414 is essentially the same as WW-760, so, if Winchester discontinues and you really need this powder, I suggest stocking up on the Hodgdon version.
Just as when changing between any two lots of powder, reduce and work back up to compensate for differences in burning characteristics.

I have run into a similair problem, but not for powder. I had to get one of my brother's rifles out of a pawn shop once (the gun is mine now), and since my address is a rural route the guy told me I had to draw a map to where I lived before he could transfer the gun. I would have said screw it, but the gun was valuable to me, so I had to do it. I made sure that the map lead to the local landfill. I also had to do this at a gunshow once, but I just went to another table where the guy didn't ask for a dumbass map. I just smiled when I walked past the first table with my new Colt in my hand.
Like has been said before,414 and 760 sameo-sameo. You/we better hope Winchester doesn't discontinue 760, 'cause if they do you can count on 414 being next to go. Same Olin subsidary company makes them both. I have a particular affection for that powder in many chamberings. Streamline thier powder line? Heck, they only have a couple-three now! I hope you are wrong about it being discontinued!

I live in Maryland in a suburb of Washington, DC. For a long time, when I've bought powder locally -- either in Maryland or Virginia -- I've been asked for my driver's license. To the best of my memory, I haven't been asked for a phone number. I've also bought powder by phone (or mail or on-line) from Grafs, in Missouri. I had to send them a photocopy of my driver's license.
My impression is that this is becoming a nationwide requirement. It seems that vendors now have to keep a written log of powder sales.

Sounds like the Canadian border just moved south a tad! I really like W760 in my '06. How does H414 do in the 30/06? I have never used it but looks like I may have to start?
K-Mart is asking if you've ever been charged with domestic abuse before buying ammo--in Oregon. I think that different retailers have different policies. I've never been questioned with reload component purchases.
All you W760 lovers can have my stock. It is a miserable powder that unfortunately is accurate in most usages. Miserable because it is overpriced, dirty as hell, messy to work with, usually peaks pressure before the velocity potential is reached, and worst of all exhibits extreme velocity fluctuation over the normal temperature range.
In every application I've found other powders that work better. Winchester would be doing a public service to kill this turd.
