These are messages I received from a guy after I bid on some Norma 6.5x55 brass on ebay. I got a real kick out of them but he seemed to be, well....sensitive:

1st msg after I bid -

You'll just make me pay more for the 6.5x 55 brass....I'm going after this auction to win for sure! Merry Christmas, Tony Wink

My response -

I'm really not sure what you mean. I do not intend to bid any higher on the brass. You can get Lapua 6.5x55 brass for 44.55 per 100 at sinclairintl.com and I believe it is better brass.

Merry Christmas,

Kevin

2nd msg -

Hey Kevin, thanks for responding and I do appreciate the suggestion. I've been reloading the 6.5 x 55 for over 40 years and I've worn out 1000's of cases in that time....Norma is without question the vastly superior product with Lapua being a binocular viewed distant second. As with everything we consume in the world....we get what we pay for. Now if Lapua brass were actually better than Norma the price would quickly ascend directly equated to demand. No capitalist on the planet settles for less when they know they can make more. -Here endeth the lesson- (Sean Connery to Kevin Costner in the Untouchables) Merry Christmas Rookie! Tony Kerby

My response -

Hah!...without question...vastly superior...As with everything we consume in the world...we get what we pay for. I dont know if i'm a rookie or not but, 1)if you believe yourself, 2)are that blindly certain that what a product brings is somehow always directly proportional to its performance, and 3) have to quote cheesy lines from movies, you are not very well informed. Merry Christmas Sucker!

By the way what bullet weights do you load in the 6.5x55? I am just building a 6.5x55 on a winchester 70 crf action. Pac-Nor is putting a new 1 in 8 barrel on it now. I would prefer to shoot one bullet weight in the round I develop for the rifle but havent started yet. The 1 in 8 barrel was for stabilizing the 140gr and up bullets but I may try to work up a good all around 120gr load. What are your suggestions?
Kevin

3rd msg -

As a retired 30 year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, spending 20 of those years on patrol in the Firestone....I've come to the conclusion that only a moron, trailer trash or a scrote would call someone a sucker after challenging his I.Q. on the obvious and then ask for advise on something he claimed to be an expert on in the first place. I will give you credit on making a good choice on your selection of the control feed action to build your rifle on. FYI: Unless your action is a Pre-64 it's not a Winchester, but in fact a US Repeating Arms made action. I politely ask you to cease further correspondance. Regards

My response -

I never meant any offence. You contacted me and made broad unsuported and unprovable statements of fact, insulted me, and condesended to me as if i were either a drinking buddy of yours or an idiot. Now you call me a moroon, trailer trash or a scrote (what the heck is a scrote?) I never chalenged your iq and never claimed to be an expert. all I said was -I believe lapua is better brass. go back and read my msgs carefully and you should come to that obvious conclusion. I believed you were just trying to have a little fun and was playing along. Nothing in any of my messages were insulting at all (except maybe to the movie the untouchables - I really like that movie by the way). I will polietly cease further correspondance at your request.

p.s. Do you mean that all the LA Sheriff Deputies are either morons, trailer trash or scrotes (again- what the heck is a scrote?) and as being one you are too? or, did you mean that because you have worked in law enforcement for so long you were exposed to morons, trailer trash, and scrotes (see above) and can recognize them by there typing?

That is all to this point. I really didn't know what to make of the whole thing.

Funny. This should almost be in the humor section. Almost sounds like somebody was trying to run the price of the brass up for a friend and had to justify the higher price once it became clear that you, unfortuantly, knew what you where looking at. But nobody would really do that. Of course it is bad business to insult a mark, i mean customer.

I got a message like that.

Do they think it will make me any less interested in the auction?
I can't see how it does them any good.

Something I was told years ago:
Smed, don't ever argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to thier level then win with experience.
I have found these good words to live by and when I have started getting into a pissing match with guys just like this one, I send them and e-mail saying "we are done with this, move on." If anything else comes in I just send it to the garbage can. Don't give them a chance and don't go to thier level.

Never argue with a pig; it just confuses the pig and wastes your time. Apparently most of society has exchanged manners and courtesy with illmanners, rudeness and political correctness. Just don't deal with people who are obviously trying to steal from you. The're are non so blind than those that want to be.

Kinda lets you know how some (certainly not the majoprity!!) of law enforcement personnel regard the folks who pay their salaries!!

Now to the subject at hand: I have used a whole lot of U.S. military, Remington, Winchester, Norma, and RWS brass, plus some other brands as well, beginning about 1954.

All brands have their ups & downs quality-wise from time to time, and none is really universes way better than the rest. Years back, I had some Norma .308 Norma Magnum and 7X57mm cases that were soft, and would not stand up to loads that were OK in both Remington & Winchester brass. In 7X57mm, Norma brass is NOT better than Remington or Winchester. But it is generally O.K.

I except Lapua here, because the only Lapua brass I've ever used was 7.62X39mm, and not much of that. It seemed OK.....

Probably because there are so many users.

That depends on one's income. Most people don't contribute anything noteworthy.

After looking at my responses and noticing all the typos and poor grammar, I think I may have given the impression of not being terribly educated or a “moronâ€. But I can certainly laugh at myself about it.

As far as law enforcement officers go, I’m afraid the quality has gone way down (at least in my area). The hiring standards are abysmal. I don’t mean that in an insulting way, as I personally know many very fine law enforcement professionals. I believe I can say this as I am in law enforcement and have been for many years. In general the honest taxpaying citizens (“people who pay their salaryâ€) get the short end of the stick because most of the metropolitan law enforcement officer’s time is spent providing police services to people who haven’t paid nor will ever pay any taxes. And, lets not forget, law enforcement officers pay taxes too so we contribute to paying our own salaries.

The Norma vs. Lapua argument-
I do not have any personal first hand knowledge of which is better. I stated I believed that Lapua was better based on my researching this forum as well as other forums. There are conflicting opinions but the general consensus seemed to be that Lapua was at least as good as Norma and about 30% less expensive. That makes me “believe†Lapua is better overall because cost is a factor in value assessment as I define it for myself. I would never attempt to force my value assessment on others but I believe is it reasonable and don’t mind expressing it in a friendly exchange of ideas. I am new to this forum and have found many topics informative and enlightening.

The msg from the guy on ebay was just kind of weird. I have never had anyone msg me after I placed a bid on an item. I didn’t mind the msg. I guess in retrospect I should not have responded to it at all. I still don’t know what the motive was and cant say that I’m terribly interested in finding out. I only asked about developing the round because when someone claims to have tremendous knowledge on a subject and seems to be eager to share the knowledge I am always interested in learning. I shouldn’t have called the guy a “sucker†as he obviously misinterpreted it. He called me a rookie because he wanted me to know he thought I was ignorant (which I am in this instance). I thought “sucker†was a fair label for some one who would pay the highest price for an equal or lesser-valued product. I meant it in the spirit of a joke not a personal slander.

Anyway,

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Kevin

Generally I find that the more narrow minded a person is (i.e. someone who knows "the best" and won't listen to any disagreement) the more obstinate and defensive that person is.
