Gents:

Can anyone share some recipes for a target/practice load using say a 200 gr or 225 gr bullet?

Thanks.

For a reduced/target/practice load I've been using 29.0grs SR4759 under 235 Speers. Fun shooting and accurate.

The 235 Speers are too soft to hunt with. The Hornady 225 gr bullet is tougher.

I use the 284 gr cast GC Lyman #377449 bullet driven by 40 gr of AA5744. The bullet is made of WW, sized to 0.377" and lubed with Carnauba Red.

Depends on what your're gonna'
hunt, works just fine on Columbian Blacktails.

I shoot a cast 310gr GC bullet at 1800fps. Six-cents a bullet if you cast your own. Mil Surplus powder, and a primer; total cost per round is almost twelve cents.

I use a 265 GC around .23 each because I'm to lazy to cast.

As usual just my $.02

Although I always use 300 grainers out of my 375 H&H, there are many dead brown bear, moose and caribou that disagree that the 235 Speer is too soft. Many of the locals here use the Speer 235s in their 375 H&H/Rugers at 2800-2900 fps, and they have never found them too soft or ineffective. Then there are many up hear that hunt the above mentioned critters with 223s.

I've had shockingly good results with 46 grains of 5744. 220 FP Hornday, 270 SP Hornday, and 300 FMJ Hornday all shoot in the same group with this load. Bob

Dr. Lou and Craigster,

Here we go again with the damn 235 gr Speer! The bloody bullet is incredibly accurate at extreme velocities (nearly 3000 fps). Love it for paper punching ... best 100 yard group so far is 0.284". Not bad for a hunting rifle.

Suspecting the thing might be a little soft, I down loaded some to 2600 fps. Shot a spike with one at about 60 yards. Shot was from the side at almost a normal angle to the long axis of the deer. Impact point was just behind the shoulder about midchest.

Bullet did what it was supposed to do ... killed the deer. However, it fragmented. I found pieces of the thing through the wound and all the way back into the front of the rear quarter.

You guys are welcome to use them ... more power to you. I'll NEVER hunt with them again! The 225 gr Hornady is much tougher and accurate enough.

BTW: Had about the same results with the 260 gr NBT. Won't use those for hunting either. The Partition works fine, yielding instant kills and little meat damage. Have about standardized on the 300 gr Barnes TSX. Dispatches piggies, deer, and African game with little fuss and little unnecessary meat damage.

I have shot a few deer with the 375 H&H using 60 and 64 gr of IMR 3031 with the Hornady 220 FP, and the 235 Speer. Both worked perfect.

I loaded up some of the 250 Sierra's with 64 gr of IMR 3031 for a buddy and he reported good results on deer as well.

30 grains gave outstanding accuracy for me. IMR 3031 with the 235's also worked quite well.
