I have nice Savage M99 in 250-3000 (aka Savage 250). I looked at the section of this website that lists favorite loads, but none of them where actually developed on a Savage rifle. Does anyone have some "favorite loads" for the Savage 250-3000 that have actually been fired out of a Savage 99?

One I used back in the '70's consisted of 33 grains of H-4895; 100 grain Speer Spz.; lit with a CCI 200 primer. Max load in my EG and never needed anything else as it killed deer just fine.

Don't have my model 99 250 anymore but I still have my records. Win brass, WLR primers and 100 gr bullets. I tried 100 gr Speer, 100 gr Hornady and bulk 100 gr Rem PSP core=lokts. 33 grs of H4895, 34 grs IMR 4320 and 39 grs of W760 all shot decent groups. Suggest you start 2 or 3 grs below these charges and work up. W760 gave the highest velocity in my old rifle but the 4895 and 4320 had slightly better groups.Very effective little cartridge.Hope that helps.

Slugslinger,
I have an old Sav. 99 with a 1 in 14 twist. It does not stabilize the longer 117 & 120 gr. spitzer bullets. 100 gr. bullets work well.

Been shooting the 250 for a long time..All my loads are 2 grs. below most book max loads. The 99 has a habit of warning me when I load a little too hot, the lever pops lose about 1/8th of an inch..and you can feel it..its time to back off a grain or two.

At 2 grs. below book max you won't lose anything in the way of killing power or trajectory and brass will last much longer. Be sure and trim regularly as the 99 streatches brass.

Thank you for the tip - I'll watch for the lever pop. I tend to stay well below maximums anyway and that seem to work well in my old Savage 99.
