Got my daughter a .243 for Christmas and would like to load her some light stuff for groundhogs and target practice this summer. I plan to use 75 gr Sierra HP for the summer, but am unsure of powder to use or charges for light kicking loads. Anyone have any they would share?

Many Thanks

The 48th edition of Lyman's Reloading Handbk. show these powders & charges for the Speer 75gr. jacketed HP:

XMR 2015 30.0 gr. -> 2,937 fps
IMR 3031 34.0 gr. -> 3,097 "
H 335 32.6 gr. -> 2,930 "
BLC-2 34.0 gr. -> 2,974 "

Although these are starting loads, they are fast (and loud). Perhaps you should experiment with IMR 4198 (up to 22.7 gr. if there are no pressure signs) or XMP 5744 (up to 17.5 gr. if there are no pressure signs) as they'll be much quieter and slower. (They're cast bullet loads and they do work!) Hope this helps, ...Maven

I know this is with a heavier bullet but I loaded up some 95 gr. Ballistic Tips using 32.5 grains of IMR-4320 for my wife. They run right around 2450 fps. from an 18" barrel and have virtually no recoil. Just thought I'd pass the infor along.

W. Va:

good state. Where Paul had recommend 4198, with loads up to 22.7 grains, I load this round up with 30 grains and 75 grain HPs.

22 to 25 grains would be ideal for low recoil., and is pretty darn accurate. I would go with the IMR vs the Hodgdon version of this powder for accuracy, in my experience.

I shoot this a lot personally. So I am fond of it.
Cheers and good shooting,

I've had very good results with 20 to 22 grains of H4227 behind a Sierra 70 grains Matchking

Hodgdon has .243 youth load for starters: http://www.hodgdon.com/data/youth/243win_y.php

I have followed their suggestion (from the youth load) in using H4895 for 300 WM and was not impressed with results from 57 gr of H4895. I hope it is the powder/bullet combination and not my new rifle.

Cheers!
