I've used the Nosler Partition for years but I'm in the mood to try something new. Sort of looking for a better mouse trap. With my 300 H&H, in a 165gr bullet, which do you think is better for taking a shoulder shot on deer size game? The Hornady SST or the Swift Scirocco? Based on what I've read I like the Scirocco's, all but the price. The SST has a better price and hopfuly they'll have the 6.5's out next month. How does either of them compair to the Ballistic Tip? Which I dislike based on past experienc in taking shoulder shots. I know the Swift is bonded and the SST has the interlock ring. Which one would offer the best weight retention and penetration?

The Scirocco would definitely have the better weight retention due to its bonded core. As for penetration, the Scirocco should penetrate completely on all broadside shoulder shots on white-tails & mulies; the SST may not do so every time.

IMO, using a conventional bullet like the SST is a step down from Partitions, especially in a magnum. You're giving up a lot of bullet integrity, which is important even in a "sedate" magnum like the .300H&H.

The Scirocco's profile is very similar to the Nosler Ballistic Tip with the same thick base. The SST does not have a thick base and it doesn't look quite as streamlined.

The SST, standard Interlock, and Ballistic Tip should be "good enough", but I'd go with the Partitions or the Scirocco just in case the buck of a lifetime shows up.

I have nothing but trouble out of Scirrocos. I know others have had success, but not me.

What kind of trouble did you have. Please tell me more.

When you put it that way I guess the Scirocco's maybe worth the extra $.

Mark,

The Sciroccos would be my choice over the SSTs, but I don't know if I would dump the Partitions, especially if the Noslers shoot well in that .300H&H.

Perhaps you could split a box with a buddy who would like to try them in his gun to reduce the cost somewhat. Who knows, they may not shoot well in your rifle.

FWIW, I bought a box of 7mm 150gr. Sciroccos for my ultra-accurate H-S Precision-built Model 70 Sporting SharpShooter in 7mmSTW since I wanted an aerodynamic, controlled expansion bullet for long-range shots. Unfortunately, the weather has been so poor on the weekends, I haven't even begun load development.

It was really the only bullet I considered using on game larger than deer. And it's not a MatchKing. [Eek!] [Wink]
