I haven´t any experience with the 5744 propelant. But it should be very good for the old ones, like the .45-70.
I have same test loads, but I don´t know if this will be OK. Confused

For my Pedersoli Sharps:
400grs H&N copperplates FN 30grs 5744 OAL: 65mm
430grs Oregon Trail FNGC 28grs 5744 OAL:65mm
490grs Lyman Snover GC 28grs OAL:2,8"

And for my High Wall:
300grs Sierra HP 38grs 5744 OAL:65mm

Thanks,

Martin

I have limited experience with loads in the 45/70, using only the 405 commercial cast bullets I bought.

These loads were supposed to be black powder equivalent pressures and they shoot well.

Can't help you with the powder you mention, but most folks in my area use IMR3031 with the 45-70 Gov't caliber. I have two, one a custom Ruger No. 3(barrel replaced by heavier and longer than issue) and Browning 1886 w/ octagon barrel and can say both shoot very well indeed with the Rem. 405 jacketed bullet or GC cast loads. Perhaps IMR3031 is not available to you??

No, no, we get the IMR propelants in Germany.
When you have enough time, you can order every US propelant. Roll Eyes
But, I use for my standard "reduced" cast loads Vitha N110 and for my High Wall and jacketed bullets Rottweil R902. But I read that the 5744 will be a better propelant for cast bullets. So I bought a small bottle. I have no experience with 5744 and the loading datas are sametimes different in the reloading handbooks.

Listed in the Accurate Arms #2 Manual for Trapdoor Pressures:

400 FN - 27.0 grains MAX
420 FN - 28.5 MAX
500 FN - 26.0 MAX

Listed data for Ruger/Marlins:

300 HP - 35.0 MAX

You should NEVER start load development with maximum or over-maximum loads.

If this does not work PM your email and I will email you a copy of the PDF file from accurate.

SR4759 is also very good and burns much cleaner.
It uses about the same charge as 5744 since it is nearly the same burning rate.

SR4759 is very bulky and fills the case well.

SR4759 - be sure you do not get it mixed with the other SR powder 475(SIX)

Thanks, SR4759,
I haven´t found the AA reloading datas. Confused
I see, they will list, for the 28000psi level, 40,8grs max behind a 300grs Sierra HP. I mean my 38grs charge will be a good starting load.

I have heard from the SR4759. Problem is, in Germany I´m only allowed to store max. 1,5kg propelant in my flat. And especial in munich, I have a quantity of only 10kg for 5 years. Under "special" circumstances you can get 20kg. killpc So, its not really easy to test many different propelants. This year I bought 2kg......... .

email Accurate Powders and ask them for a load with 5744. They have been very helpful to me in producing reduced loads for my 404 Jeffery and my 375 H&H with 5744.

Thanks SR4759,
there was an misunderstanding. Befor your posting, I haven´t found it. After your posting yesterday, I have straight away printed it. In paper form it´s better for looking about.
Tomorrow, I´m on shooting range, and then I will know more.

Get a copy of Lyman's 49th edition reloading handbook. 45-70's have three sets of loading data. Low pressure for springfield trapdoor black powder firearms, medium for 1886 Winchester and Marlin 1895, and last high pressure for Ruger No 1 and 3. I have used xmp-5744 in both my Trapdoor and Marlin using the proper data. I don't know which data to use with the Pedersoli Sharps. From what I saw in your first post, the loads are max loads for low pressure side. The "high wall" load falls into medium pressure in the data. Be careful.

Thanks rem2035,
I have the 49th Lyman reloding book. But I have just in case asked, why I´m a little distrustful with US loading datas for the .45-70. In Germany it´s only allowed to load this round up to 2200bar.
Today, I tested my loads, with more and less successful results. The best load was at 100m with the Oregon Trail bullet. Second was the 400grs copperplated FN and the Snover was not so good, but I mean, my "casting" was not the best. Roll Eyes

Thanks,

Martin

For my own use in reloading the 45-70 I've never gone beyond IMR4895, H4895, IMR4198 and Reloader7

4227 and 4759 have about the same burning rate as 5744. The data for all is very close to the same. You can use the data for each as a check against the other data.
