I bought a can of IMR 7828, based on a friends recommendation for my 300RUM...."you will LOVE it" he says....Well, My 300 Winnie, and my 300 RUM dont concur!!!
I have tried it with Partitions, SST's, Match Kings for crying out loud, and zero results as far as accuracy.
Is it just the wrong powder for these 2 rifles???
They love the Reloader 22 and 25 greatly though..
180gr. bullets is all Ive tried it with...sakofan...

I have gone to your wonderful, informative pages since my 7828 episode, Steve...

But, I still have all this powder laying around that dont like my .30 calibers....

And BTW, you have 7828 listed as a powder youve tried w/ 300 Win. mag and 300 RUM....
But, its not in white..."if it aint in white it aint right"...right???.....sakofan...

I love your pages my friend..its helped me and others enormously... [Wink]

The "white" powder is the one I found best at the time I did the testing and in the firearm I was using for the test.

The only load I tested that IMR-7828 showed any promise in was with 190 grain bullets in the .300 Winchester.

I found IMR-7828 the "powder of choice" in around 31 different loads, some of which are:

220 Jaybird 60 grain bullet
243 Winchester 100 grain bullet
256 Scramjet 85 grain bullet
264 Winchester Magnum 87 grain bullet
6.5-06 120 bullet
6.5-284 Norma 130 grain bullet
270 Weatherby 160 grain bullet
270-300 Weatherby 150 grain bullet
280 Remington 168 to 170 grain bullets
284 Winchester 175 and 195 grain bullets
280 Remington Improved 150 and 175 grain bullets
7mm Remington Magnum 139 grain bullet
7mm ST Western 120 and 195 grain bullets
7mm Weatherby 195 grain bullet
308 Warbird 150 grain bullet
30-284 Winchester 250 grain bullet
300 Dakota 190 grain bullet
30-378 Weatherby 110 grain bullet
30-06 250 grain bullet
8MM Remington Magnum 220 to 225 grain bullets
338-378 Weatherby 180 and 185 grain bullets
338 A-Square 250 grain bullet
338 Lapua Magnum 160 grain bullet
358 UMT 225 grain bullet
358 ST Alaskan 300 grain bullet
378 Weatherby 285 grain bullet

So...if you have any of those...try your IMR-7828 in them...if not...you can always dump it on your flower garden...

Is it possible it's just the two rifles you have? I use 7828 exclusively in my 300rum with good accuracy and vel. (180grn bullets). I don't think you should kick yourself for trying the powder. Could have been what your rifles like. Trade it off to a buddy and try a different powder. Works for me and don't have a bunch of unwanted powder laying around.

You my a couple of rifles that simply don't like the IMR-7828.
As for my Win. 300 RUM I've been getting very good results so far with 7828 and Sierra's Pro Hunter 150 gr.

Good idea...give it to my buddy!!!
I guess I'll stick with what works..rl22 and 25, as Steves pages have recommended...
It's strange to me, how "identical" calibers, makes, and models, differ in their tastes of bullets and powders....
My 300 win. mag. being VERY fickle, and the 300 RUM, shooting any and everything great...except for the 7828!!!
Thanks for the posts and responses....
I guess Im just stubburn.... [Mad]

So far, IMR-7828 has given me the best accuracy and velocity in my .300 Wthby, and my buddy's .270 Wthby and .338-378 Wthby, but that's different rounds than your .300 RUM.

Not so weird...at one time in my life I dated two "identical twin sisters" at the same time...

They definately had different likes and dislikes...

I read another post that used 55-56 grains of 7828 behind the 117 Hornady BT and 215 primers in the 25-06. I thought this powder would be too slow. What do you think?
