7.62x38R: Any load data or specs?
Can anyone point me to any data regarding factory loads and pressures, or reloading data on this round?
I wanted to make some plinkers using swaged HBWC wand bullseye, and then maybe try to make a factory duplicate load with DEWC or JHP.

The plinking load should be easy but it seems to come up with a duplicate load one has to divine it from comparable cartridge comparisons. I found just a few odd pages where someone had worked up a load or two but no pressure data. Maybe some chrono readings.

Also if you have reloaded this round, what was your recipe?

Thanks in advance

Yes sir the nagant revolver. I picked up a Lee die set which was cheap but appears is not truly for the factory cases and opens a can of worms.. Once I get set up and start digging into it I will post anything I come up with that works.

Thanks for the reference. That looks like the most detailed info I have yet to see.

I have the Lee die set which then article explains is intended to form 32-20 brass into a short version of the 7.62 with no gas seal. I intend to try to reload the real 7.62 cartridges... So I may have to do some thing creative or mix n match the tooling..

I may just end up "neck sizing" the cartridge and shooting the target loads with the soft swaged wadcutters to plink...maybe use factory ammo to varmint hunt..

Will report back!

Have fun but it wasn't worth my time or effort when there are so many nicer/easier to reload rounds and pistols to play with.

Hi
Seems there are several options to keep or lose the gas seal using various combinations of die sets.

I already have the Lee die set and 1000 swaged hbwc bullets so I set up the press to load them..just need to settle in on powder and charge. Probably Unique as I have a whole can of it unopened.

I wondered about bore size and ammo diameter. The factory ammo is .308 as I recall but it seems some folks are maybe shooting 32 caliber like .313 diameter.. I suppose this is not a problem with soft swaged bullets as I have which I think are .313 diameter but what is the proper bore size lands and grooves say for a .308 diameter bullet?

I am holding off buying any jacketed bullets until I measure my bore. I think if my bore is .308 then I need to stick to .308 jacketed bullets...

I noticed #0 buckshot is .320 diameter and 49 grains... This could be a fun mouse load and cheap to plink with. Maybe a good squirrel load? But is that a bit large for my bore if it measures .308? The buckshot may be too big to fit into the cartridge without extreme expanding.. I did have good luck with #000 shot in the 38 caliber as a cheap light load but it measured .360 and real bullets where .357 diameter so it was a closer fit.

This is my first time reloading something this unusual.. Normally I reload straight forward stuff.

Thanks in advance if you have any experience or advice!

Moving forward.. I may cut open one of my twelve gauge buckshot shells and try slugging barrel with the buckshot and then with the hbwc and see if I can tell any measurable difference in difficulty of forcing the bullet down the barrel...

It is a lot of work but an interesting endeavor. I just looked and saw muzzloading balls are available in .310 diameter... But cost as much as a bullet..

Brad:

I understand your intentions /goals but drifting into lala land with your unorthodox other projectiles leave me with my option to vacate. Sorry,

I have numerous load recommendations with conventional bullets.

I have loaded the HBWC over Trail Boss. Use the .32-20 load of Trail Boss. Very nice shooting in the Nagant revolver.
