I've read a things on guys using non magnum primers in Magnum cartridges for better accuracy.

Any thoughts?

No one can answer that for you...it all depends on the other components you are using and whatever your rifle reacts best to.

Accuracy might be more affected by how many Cokes you've drunk. Or coffee. Or in Steve's case, Pepsi.

I tried non-magnum primers in my .300 Weatherby. Accuracy was the same though velocity was lower.

Leo,

I would not have expected that result. Most manuals of which I'm aware recommend less powder - less velocity - when using magnum primers.

You can tinker around and make a lot of recipes that are very accurate but to say a magnum primer or non magnum primer is more accurate doing hold much water. Your rifle may love this and my rifle loves that. Good luck trying to figure it out and have a little fun along the way.

I was told by one of the federal engineers that they do not use magnum primers with any of the Reloader line powder. After I switched I have recieved more consitent velocity readings, and better groups.

I've had sim. experiences as safari. I pretty much don't use a magnum powder unless I am using a big charge of ball powder. Even in "magnum" rounds I find that Fed. 210M or RP 9 1/2 give more uniform vel. & just slightly better accuracy.

I use normal CCI large rifle primers in my .300Win. mag. Don't know if the change in primers resulted in better accuracy or I am just shooting better. I got tired of buying both normal and magnum primers and had read about useing normal primers in magnums so I gave it a try.

Hey Mag61, Steve is right on the nose in his brief comment.

When you work up a Load using one Primer, you will eventually find a Harmonic Cluster where the shots group together.

Change Primers and the Harmonic changes slightly. It might produce a tighter group, the same size group or a larger group, but the Harmonic has changed.

The resaon it changes is because the different Primers alter the burning process due to their varying Intensities and Durations. This shifts the overall Pressure Peak and Duration which results in the Harmonic being different.

Now that you have read through all this, go back and you will see Steve was both correct and concise. (Just don't ask him about Tires! Wink)

Magnum 61 ----- I shoot several Magnum rifles and load everything I shoot. I use only Federal primers. I load 210M primers (non magnum) for my .300 Win mag with which I use RL-22 powder. The reason I use the non magnum primer is my group will grow to inch from pin point accuracy if I use the 215M primer (magnum). All my other Magnum rifles including 7mm STW and up I use the 215M primer and get pin point acccuracy. I pay attention to what the manual reccomends and tweak from there. At one time I used all the primers sold, then noticed my accuracy loads were normaly the Federal primers and dicided to take that varience out of the equation, now I use only Federal. wave Good shooting.

I doubt if anyone will ever come up with a chart that shows specific primers matched with specific powders and charges.

There are some basic premises that everyone seems to follow, but I have found exceptions to every rule.
ie: ball powders=magnum primers
magnum cartridges= magnum primers
match primers= better accuracy
I have personally found that if I am not getting the results I like. Switching primers can make a big difference.
