Quickload Experts--

I'm working up accelerator bullet loads for the 300 Win Mag and would really appreciate some help.....

The bullets w/sabot weigh 61 gr...

Powders on hand include:

IMR 3031
IMR 4064
H4895
IMR 4350
IMR 4831

I've loaded some starters with the 100g HP data from Sierra and IMR 3031....but since there really is no data for this speed project I would appreciate any suggestions you can generate about which powder might be best and what type of max loads/velocities to anticipate.

Ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Don't know if this will copy over or not but I guessed at bullet length and set pressure to 50k.

Barrel Length : 25.0 inch or 635.0 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.

Matching Maximum Pressure: 50000 psi, or 344 MPa

or a maximum loading ratio or filling of 108 %

These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.
USE ONLY FOR COMPARISON !

64 loads produced a Loading Ratio below user-defined minimum of 80%. These powders have been skipped.

Kraky--

Thanks for the great data!

My best load so far (based on your data) is 76.6 gr., which gives 4580 fps from the 26" barrel. It hasn't been wrung out for best groups yet but is giving only 16fps in extreme spread on a 10 shot group....pretty promising.

There are no pressure signs and a bit more room for powder....

Guess I need to get quickload for myself....I think I'm hooked!

Thanks again for the help,

Good Shooting,

Dan

So you've loaded....test fired and chrono'd?

What powder did you use?

How was accuracy?

I had a buddy that had an old box of remington for his 30-06 rem auto. I was SHOCKED how good they shot at 100yds. I was expecting 3-5" (or bigger groups) and they were probably 1.5-2".
I can't remember what we chrono'd them at but I think it was near 4000 fps out of the '06.

Sorry--in my haste I forgot to say it was IMR 3031. Loaded, test fired and chrono'd 10 rounds....no definitive accuracy tests yet, but quite repeatable. I think (based on busting fragments of clay birds at 100m) that it will at least be inside 2". Better wouldn't surprise me, especially with careful rest against a target.

This is from a 26" stainless barrel on a T/C Encore. This particular rifle (unfortunately it is a friend's and not mine!) shoots an inch or better with Rem factory 180g loads and better than 1/2" with its .223 barrel....surprising for a forearm screwed to the barrel.

We started with 65g of IMR 3031 and got about 3500 fps, low pressure and large muzzle flash....then worked up toward your data from quickload. Pressure still appeared quite normal and flash went away with more normal pressure for better combustion....

When I get more info I'll forward it on.

I had a box of accelerators for my 30-06....If I recall it shot better than 2" but the point of aim was 6 or 8 inches above the norm so I didn't mess with them. That was long before I had a chrono.

Like I said, I've been eyeing quickload for a while, and playing with the demo I downloaded. It seems like a very useful tool to reference.

Have you found it helpful for matching performance with barrel length?

Also, do you have a preference on bullet runout/concentricity gages? The doubt is starting to nag at me.....

Cheers,

Dan

I've had quickload and updated 3 times now. The latest is really accurate. I'm pretty shocked at how close the speed is on the accelerators you tested.
I used to value quickload about as much as a reloading manual but I'm starting to think it's consderably more reliable now. (but I still cross reference).
I do have an RCBS concentricity gauge. I try to make straight ammo and have a few methods for getting it done. BUT, I still think that 98% of a guns accuracy comes from it's "liking" of bullet, powder, and seating depth. A very good gun maker told me that he personally attempts to get his loads under .003" runnout but doesn't believe there is much difference to .005". He said after .005" there will be a pretty "tell tale" difference in accuracy. From my experience I believe his philosophy.
