I bought $300 worth of cases and bullets yesterday, and they put it in a flat rate usps box.

I like their same day service, and Larry Potterfield is a first rate guy.

I knew him many years ago when he was "poor" and now he has not changed a bit.

We need more folks like him.

Well, I emailed Larry and got a response today, less than 24 hours.

Here is his response to our thread and the concerns we voiced:

Tom,
I certainly will use this as a coaching opportunity for my phone
operators. As you probably guessed, the information that started this
thread is incorrect. When we introduced the flat rate boxes, we kept a
very close eye on the customer reports about damaged packages. As a
result of this information, we made some decisions about what products
would continue to qualify for the program. Basically, while the USPS
advertising saying of "if it fits it ships" which is close, but in
truth it should say "if it fits with adequate padding to insure the
product arrives undamaged it ships". We had too many claims for damage
with some of the larger quantities, so the flat rate shipping is not
available for them. In addition to the Flat Rate shipping, in response
to the constantly increasing shipping costs, last year we also
introduced UPS Basic in addition to the traditional services offered by
UPS. As an overview, when a customer selects UPS Basic, the UPS driver
has the option of passing the package to the local post office for final
delivery. If the UPS truck does not have to go to every customers house
on the route but just has to make one stop at the post office to drop
off the packages, the cost of delivery goes down significantly for UPS
and they pass the savings on to the customers that select UPS Basic. It
averages about one day longer than regular ground UPS service, which of
course is still available at a slightly higher rate. But it is another
option in the constant struggle to keep shipping costs in line as
transportation costs continue to climb.

Welll!!! I'd like to know what he's gonna do about changing his policy on charging me around 20 some dollars for shipping for the shell holder for my Kinetic bullet puller for my .270 WSM. This was some years ago before I realized that I could just use my RCBS shell holder for my press. Oh!! I forgot. They also sent their 400 (or so page catalog) that I didn't ask for and promptly shitcanned. Very expensive shell holder - what!!!
Then again, we all KNOW it's more expensive to ship to Alaska. I'm still not convinced tho.

Not happy with Midway at times. Sometimes shipping seems excessive, but my orders get here within about two days.
Cabelas is another story. Ordered 3 Nikon scopes. You could have fit 20 scopes in the box they used and they didn't use ANY packing in the box. The scope/boxes were just rattling around in the grossly oversized box. Luckily, they were OK.

I think we need to keep in mind also the company's that support gun rights, NRA etc.
I think Midway is sponsoring a good chunk of the Annual meeting in PA. this year, and they donate to many smaller organization fundraiser. I'm not saying the competition doesn't also, but I bet it's not on the same scale.

Upon opening my Flat Rate box today, I noticed that they put another box inside. It fits perfectly and acts as a liner to protect the contents, plus some air bags to fill the space.

I'd say a "Job well done".

I certainly don't know the man and will take your word on it but I must say if what you say is true then he has learned a few things after his scuttling of the Fajen Company after Reinhart Fajen sold out.

I never saw a company go to hell so fast!

You mean like Graf & Son who will only honor a C&R if you purchase >$2K per year? Sure reloading is my hobby, but I don't spend $2K a year to enjoy it. I got into it to SAVE $$$ not to go into the poor house to get a discount.
