I have a fine old Ferlach Bock-Buchsflinte (hope I have that right) 16 ga over 8mm x 72R and a high grade Suhl Drilling in 16 ga/16 ga x 9.3 x 72R. Both are in excellent condition, and I'd like to get both shooting again (the rifles, that is.) Both use the same parent case apparently. I would love to have loading data for both, and if someone has some fired cases and/or dies for either, I would be interested. Chamber and bore casts confirm both cartridges to be as identified according to published cartridge drawings, and the 8mm is an "S" bore, .323. Any help would be appreciated.

I've seen RWS data for both on www.ladedaten.info before the site went to a pay format. You might try it, but the site is in German. There was 8x72R data (rather hot looking) in an older VV book, 1st or 2nd edition, but it was for .318 bullets (as was the RWS data). The CIP still lists both for dimensions and pressures. Sorry, that's not what you wanted, but it's all I have in my notebook.

I think COTW has some basic data for the 8x72R. Load data for the 9.3x72R is hard to come buy but you should be able to extrapolate data from the 9.3x74R.

For the 8X72R:
RL15 45.0gr; 150gr SP; .323" 2334f/s
RL15 43.0gr; 170gr SP; .323" 2240f/s
Source: RWS
IMR3031 38.0gr; 225gr SP .323" 1910f/s
Source: COTW F.C. Barnes
Unfortunately there isn't much listed for the 9.3X72R except that it utilized a 186 grain bullet, and that both the 8mm and 9.3 version utilized the same parent case.

I found a couple boxes of new S & B loaded 9.3 x 72R rounds, that should get me started with one of them, and the data you guys have shared will help if I can find dies for the 8 x 72R. Don't really want to spring for $100+ new dies, but it may be necessary. The 8mm case is made by just full length sizing the fired 9.3mm case in the 8 x 72R die. Would love to have brass better than S & B, but that's all I have found so far. Any leads as to used dies and brass would be appreciated. Thanks very much for these suggestions. More welcomed if forthcoming.

Horneber lists 8x72R brass on their site, and HDS has imported their stuff in the past. Not all Horneber brass is available at all times, so you might write HDS to see when the brass would be available. It won't be cheap. HDS also lists Norma 9.3x72R brass at roughly half the price you might get the Horneber for. In general, both Horneber and Norma brass seem to have good reputations.

I don't know the names Horneber or HDS, they are both new to me. Can you provide contact information, perhaps a web site? Thanks for the lead.

I think you have an easier option other than custom dies for the 8x72.

Take the expander button out of your 9.3x73 sizing die and use it to body size your cases. Then use 8mm Reminton Mag die set to size the neck and seat the bullets.

According to the RWS manual "Wiederladen" the 8x72R is not a "S-caliber" and therefor you should use .318 bullets.
In an old Viht. guide I found the following load:
196 SP RN RWS Bullet, COL 90.4 mm, 41.4 grains N140, 700 m/s listed as a maximum load.
The RWS manual gives just one load for the 9.3x72 with a 193 grains SP flat nose bullet. COL is 84.8 mm and max. velocity 670 m/s. The charge weights are some 15% higher than those for the 8x72R.
Hope this helps.

ChiefShotguns, Horneber is a German maker of cartridge brass, mostly for the rarer European cases. HDS is located next to RCBS and carries the complete line of RCBS reloading equipment along with an extensive line of reloading components from numerous makers, including Horneber cases. While it sounds as if you know of them, CH-4D has dies for both, and theirs are usually less expensive than the other suppliers of dies for odd cartridges.

Hi dutchgus, thanks. This barrel is actually stamped in the proofs as an "S" bore, and it slugs to about .3235. Apparently this round is like a lot of other German and Austrian cartridges in that both the "J" and "S" bores were used.

Johnly, an outstanding suggestion. My "lightbulb" is now lit and burning. I had not even thought to use another die set, but I have a couple that will work as you sugggested.

Thanks to everyone who responded.
