For years I used 4064 and 50gr Vmax's and TNT's with great success. On a whim, I tried Varget and the old M70 did even better. A "sleeper" bullet, IMO, is the 63gr Sierra. Amazing accuracy. The BC is not great, but I use it for varmint calling. A lot of guys use it for deer....I prefer a heavier caliber.

Congrats on your 225..it's a great ol' cartridge!

trouble is, the .225 data has been dropped from the most modern books....and i gave my .225 dies away several yrs ago... CRYBABY... my reloading friend is using a 22/250 die, backed off to only neck size... it works, 'cause its all being shot in the same gun...i bought the .225 in 1977 from tristate a&m sporting goods in college station...s/n says it was made in 1965...i used to shoot 3/4" groups at 100... but can't find the load data....so im still looking for accurate loads... thanks, guys...

I looked in some older reloading manuals and 32.9gr of 4064(Hornady #5) or 33gr of 4064 (Speer #9) seem to be about max. Ken Waters, in his 1972 Pet Loads column, listed 32gr of 4064 with a 52gr Speer HP as the "most accurate load tested".

Didn't see any data for Varget, but it is listed on the Hodgdon website as slightly slower than 4064, so seems to me you could use 4064 data and work up slowly.

Don't know if this will help, but shot one for several years in the early 1970's. So opened up my Speer # 8, back then I tried H380, IMR 4895 and BLC-2, I wrote on bottom of page BLC-2 most accurate powder tested with 55 gr Speer, also shows 33.0 grs and a note 3 deer taken with load. Rifle was a 340 Sacvage with K4 Weaver. That's a few years back, so don't remember details, but I know all the powders I used back then were surplus and sold to me from drums. The manual shows 29-33 grs for 55 gr Speer and 30-34 for 52 gr HP

My .225 was a M-70 made about 1965 and I never loaded anything surpassing factory 55 grain loads.....So I loaded for economy only as the factory loads allowed me to hit a penny very consistantly at 100 yards.

I'm sure I could do better today but 40 years ago I had a lot to learn about reloading.

Based on what works in the 22-250 I'd work up to 36 grains of H-380 with a 52-53 grain bullet. (from Hornady's handbook)`3,600'/sec.
