we're having bad luck with the factory 30-06 loads we've tried (CXP2s)...

so basically, need some good starting points to work from...

the gun is a pre-WWII Mauser 98 conversion, it has a stepped-down 30-cal machine-gun barrel on it (litterally, my grandfather made it).

if you have ANY idea where to start, I would appreciate it.

for now its a deer/pronghorn rifle, but eventually I will need some elk/moose loads too...

any help is appreciated, I need some clue as to what to pick up at the ammo store this weekend!

I would try to duplicate M2 ball loads being it is useing a machine gun barrel. I am pretty sure they used the same load the M1 used. I get good results with 48 grains of IMR 4064 under pulled M2 ball in my Garands. For hunting you just need to replace the M2 ball bullet with your favorite 150 grain hunting bullet. I would try Sierra's or Nosler's. Please look in a book and check my load before useing it as I do not take responsibility for it or typo's.
