short barreled 264 - powders?

Last year I picked up a FN belgian mauser with a 22" barrel in 264 win mag. I believe the barrel is original, and also that it was mfg by Douglas.

I know this is quite short for the caliber, but the gun is a shooter, its quite light, and I plan to keep it at its original length.

I have had good luck with 120, and 130gr Noslers over RL22. As you can imagine, the rifle is incredibly loud.

I'm looking for suggestions on other powders (perhaps something in the burning range of h4895?) that might work well in this case. I'd like to reduce the noise level somewhat, and I'm ok with power levels around a 6.5 swede.

Thanks in advance.

I haven't worked with that cartridge but 4895 is well known to work very well in moderately reduced loads.

Use the same powders in the 22" tube as you would use in a 26" tube.....and the noise is terrific even in the longer barrels.....

You have a small velocity loss.....nothing more

Treat your gun and loads the same as with a longer barrel.

Here's what quick load says about H4895 in a 22" barrel.
Should be a great load for the kids/grandkids:

Cartridge : .264 Win. Mag.
Bullet : .264, 130, Nosler AccuBond 56902
Useable Case Capaci: 75.520 grain H2O = 4.903 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch = 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm
Powder : Hodgdon H4895

Should be a great load for the kids/grandkids:

Assuming that you don't want to shoot your .264 primarily at kids and grandkids, follow Vapo's advice and use the same powders that you would use in any length barrel. RL-22 is pretty fast for a .264 to begin with, but will probably do most of what you can do in a 22" barrel. The burning characteristics of powders vary, so it might be that you would find the subjective muzzle blast of some other powder in that burning range to be a bit less, but regardless, with a case that handles relatively as much powder as the .264, muzzle blast is going to be significant with any load that approaches full power.

Like Stonecreek says, RL22 is fast in itself for the .264. I wouldn't even think of H4895

You need to be thinking more along the lines of US-869, WC-872, RL25, Retumbo.

Taking Stonecreek's advice, I use WC-872 in my .264 with great results. I had good velocity with the US-869 but couldn't get the accuracy.
