.300 Win Mag & Reloader 17
Hi fellow reloaders,
I hunt with a Mauser MO3 in .300 Win Mag with 20" barrel and have a successful handload of 180gr Barnes TSX and 64gr. of H4350. I am trying to develop a load with 180gr. Nosler with green ballistic tip and the Alliant powder 'Reloader 17'. The Alliant website states a maximum load of 70.5gr so I have loaded up 5 x rounds at 65gr, 5 x 65.5 etc up to 69.5gr. I have yet to trial these loads to work out the best grouping. My question: "Has anyone out there done anything with Reloader 17 and this calibre on a 20" barrel?
Thanks for any help here.

I have not, but I'm about to try some RL17 in .308 with a 20" barrel. There's some guys on Sniper's Hide who are using RL17 with the 208 AMax and getting over 2500 fps out of the 20" barrel in .308. One fellow has gotten over 2700 with that bullet and powder in a 26" PSS and another has gotten over 2600 in a 20" barrel with what he admits is a hot load. RL17 appears to be a really great powder for this sort of application. Good luck.

jeffeossoOkay, I'll bite ..
why? rel22 is THE powder for the 300winmag ..
now, of course, you might be trying to consolidate to a single powder ..

I'd guess it's too maximize the velocity/minimize the velocity loss out of the short barrel.
The other question is why a 20" barrel on a .300 Win Mag?

jeffeossoah.. that makes sense .. i use h335 for that!
Just thought I'd try it, as it is faster burning and may be more suitable in my short 20" barrel.
I will post results in a while.

When I first took it Africa, the 25" barrel plus 4" ASE Utra suppressor made it very unwieldy in the bush, so when I got back to UK, I had it cut and re-threaded at 20" like my .308 barrel. Most of the deer I shoot in UK are at a maximum range of 300 metres, so I don't need extreme velocity at distance to ensure the bullet expands properly.

jeffeossovery well! do try h335 .. its faster still .. lots of gas volume in a shorter barrel .. bit hot, but you aren't shooting varmits with one ..
Thanks for this one.
