Hi all, a few months ago I picked up some used reloading equipment that contained lots of .308 cal. bullets and 1# cans of the folloing: w748, imr4198 and imr4895.So I just had to go out and buy a new NEF Handi rifle in 30/30 Winchester to burn some of this stuff up! Here are the bullets I would like to try w/ these powder combinations,
Sierra 150gr spitzer boatail game king
Speer 150gr spitzer boatail
Hornady 165 spitzer boatail
since I can't find any info in the reloading manuals I have, I was hoping somebody might have some safe loads to start with. I would also like to try the Sierra 125gr flatnose hollowpoint, has anyone tried this on whitetail or is this to light ?
thanks in advance, Dan

In the Speer #12 manual it lists the fallowing.
150g Bullet
Win 748 from 33g to 37g
IMR4895 from 27g to 31g
It does not show 4198 used with the 150g bullet.
I load 150g Winchester PSP power points with IMR4064, and 125g Remington PSP with H335 for my deer hunting loads. I would not use the 125 HP for deer hunting. If you are looking for speed, stick with the 125g bullets and H335, BLC-2 or similar powders. I get about 2650- 2700 fps from the 125 in a 24" barrel. Try the 110g Hornady PSP, it works pretty good on varmints.

Ohaygen, I shoot a lot of 130 and some 140 grain spitzers in my two NEF/H&R 30-30 rifles.

If you want the load data, let me know. I am not sure it would help you, thats why I didn't post it.

Each one of my rifles seem to be accurate but the load data is quite a bit different (by 3 grains) to shootthe same bullet.

Chainsaw, any load data I could get my hands on would be great. I like to
do a lot of thinking and comparing of loads before I work some up. How
have the 130 gr worked on deer? Thanks for your time. I tried contacting you by email but it got returned

regards

Deer being thin skinned animals are not hard to put down. The 125 and 130 PSP, RN, FN, bullets are better suited for deer harvesting. The HP bullet design will open to fast on deer sized game. Shot placement along with the right bullet selection translates to success. The IMR-4895 and WW-748 may shoot well in the 30-30 Cartridge. The 30-30 cartridge is and has been one of the very best deer cartridges used in medium to heavy cover deer hunting venues. Few deer are taken past 70 yards in medium to heavy cover situations. I would try the IMR-4895 powder with the 125, 130, grain bullet. Starting load 32.5 maximum load listed 36.0. With the WW-748 powder starting load 34.5 maximum load listed 38.0. Never exceed the maximum load listed for safe shooting. Most rifles will exibit their best accuracy with medium range loads.
