I finally decided on a big game cartridge and got the barrel for the encore today. After much debate I went with 7mm-08. Looks like the ballistics will be good for deer and antelope out to 300yds and maybe 200 for elk.

I bought some 120gr Nosler BT's to break it in. I'll be starting with 37.5 gr of Varget. I want to put together several different loads to take to the range. Hodgon lists the max suggested load at 45 grains. Looking for suggestions on staggering the charges.

Dman,
Nice choice on caliber! thumb(next rifle will be the same)
Who's barrel? Oh and what twist? (barrel ? curiosity) (twist ? for bullet stability)
Recommended 1:9" for bullets over 140grn, 1:11 bullets up to 140grn.
Not real sure about what question you are asking but if you are looking for what increment to increase, I usually do 0.5grns.

Yes, Smedley that is what I am asking. I didn't know if I should be upping the charge by 1 or 1.5 grains (I'm pretty new at this). I guess at .5 it will just take a few more trips to the range to narrow it down to the perfect load.

The barrel is a TC factory 24in. w/ 1/9 twist. I haven't had any complaints with any factory barrels yet. The way some people talk about them you would think I couldn't shoot my way out of a paper bag with their barrels.

Well see how this one shoots. thumb thumbdown bewildered

Oh by the way Dman,
Welcome to the ZOO!! beer

If it takes more trips so be it you will learn more each time you do it!!
Also by going up 0.5grn at a whack you can catch pressure signs before they become pressure problems!
On the safety side of it all, take your time and be aware of what your doing. If you have questions, don't be afraid to ask.

And most of all: Have FUN!! Wink

Got to the range today. I started out with some factory ammo and zeroed the scope, then shot my first handloads.

First group! My first reloading success story. Thanks to everyone on the board for sharing their wealth of knowledge. This place, and the internet in general are an incredible resource for people like me who need a clue!

Dman,

Nice job! Congratulations on the barrel. I bought the same barrel about 4 years ago. It shoots mintue of deer to about 25 yards, after that it's minute of barn (if it's a big barn). Spent 2 summers looking for load it likes but never found one. Finally gave up and bought a 700 mountain rifle in the same caliber. Quickly found a load that keeps 1/2 moa for 3 shoots.

Staggering charges: I usually start at the suggested starting charge and work up in 0.5 grain levels until reaching a max load. Accuracy in most of my rifles seems to come at a few grains below max.

After checking out your target, I think there might be something wrong with yours also. Maybe you could send it to me and I'll check it out for ya. I'll have it back to ya in a couple years!! thumb

Have a great day!

I can't decide if I shoot to load, or load to shoot! The line between the two is very thin!

Yep, 2-0 on encore barrels. Let's hope the streak continues. I don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

While all the loads I shot were very accurate. The first was by far the best. I shot 6 rounds of each, and cleaned/cooled the barrel after each.

It is a recomended starting load of 37.5 gr varget. I don't have a chrono yet, so I don't know what kind of velocity I am looking at. I will work it up closer to max and see if it tightens up again.

Thanks
D
