Whittakers Gun shop just west of Owensboro is a must stop. LOTS of guns at some good prices sometimes. They are the biggest shop in this area. In Evnasville there is RAJO's gun shop on the west side on Franklin street. Also there is the Match Armorers Shop about 15 to 18 miles north of Evansville. He builds rifles for long range, and NRA High Power competition. He also builds tactical rifles, and hunting rifles. He is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 3 to 9 PM if you are interested in that sort of thing. That about covers it for this area. The squirrel hunting is pretty good this year. Seems to be plenty of them. Hope this helps some. Enjoy your stay. RiverRat

I'll be meeting a buddy in Owensboro Kentucky for a couple of days and we are wondering if there are any good gunshops or other things to see in the area? How is the squirrel hunting in the region?

Man, this thread is better than the AAA Tour Book. (They don't put gun shops in that.) Anyone have ideas on where to stay down in that Owensboro area? I'd like to find a cabin or cottage down there for a few days, but don't want to fork over $100 per night for something pretty. Thanks. PAndy

I forgot Moonlite, outstanding place to eat. It definetly is a must stop as well. I don't know of any cabins or cottages to stay in, but that don't mean they aren't available. Numerous motel and hotels on the river front. RiverRat

Lots of hotels in the Owensboro area under 100 bucks. I can't think of any cottages/cabins in the immediate Owensboro area. Cottonmouth Lodge (@50 mi south) is a nice place at around 60 bucks a night. Pennyrile State Park in Dawson Springs, KY (maybe 60 miles southwest)has cabins and cottages at very reasonable rates. As far as gun shops, Whittaker's is hard to beat, although it's located in West Louisville (not old Louisville). Hey, I just thought of something- Diamond Lake Campground, also in West Louisville- might have some cabins, and it's only about 15 miles west of Owensboro. When you call Darrel at Whittaker's to get directions, ask him about Diamond Lakes, he'll have the number. Whittaker's # is 270-229-0140, website at whittakerguns.com. One last stop might be Uncle Lee's in Greenville, KY, about 35 miles south of Owensboro. Whittaker's may have a better gun selection, but for sporting goods Uncle Lee's can't be beat. I'll have to second the Moonlite BBQ suggestion, but bring a big appetite for the buffet. Enjoy yourselves. TJ

My son lives in KY, and we normally try to pay a visit to Whittaker's whenever I'm able to visit him. On our last trip there we also did the BBQ Buffet at Moonlite, and it left something to be desired. Maybe I'm just used to the wonderful BBQ served here in N.Alabama. Rick

It's a couple hours north, but Hick's Gun Trading post in Pinkcneyville, IL has a pretty good selection. Back in college, about two months after the coal mines in the area had a strike, or a mine closing, we would take our GI bill money and go pick up whatever they had a glut of. Got a ticket in that town once. $35.00. Shit, now they tag you for twice that just for a warning. JCN

Owensboro advertises that they are the barbecue capitol of the world. Don't dare miss the buffet at the Moonlite Barbecue! www.moonlite.com/ Also, Whittakers Gun Shop is a must see. The only shop I know where "all" the long guns are on racks for all to see and handle and not stored behind a counter where you have to get a salesman to allow you to look at a gun. Just outside Owensboro in a little community called Old Louisville. Lots of guns! www.whittakerguns.com/home.htm Bartletts is near downtown on 9th Street. He sells military surplus brass, bullets, and powder. It's a mail order internet business and he's not always open. Just when he is filling orders is he there, so call beforehand and he'll meet you if you're interested in buying and not just looking! www.gibrass.com

OK Sanman, if you don't like the BBQ at Moonlite, try Shady Rest BBQ on the other end of town, on HWY 60 at Coast Guard Lane. I'm kind of partial to good mutton, and both have great mutton as far as I'm concerned. Shady Rest is more like an old diner, but the food is great. Old Hickory and George's are both good too, but different styles of barbeque. Or you could just come in during the BBQ festival and eat to you hearts content. By the way, if you didn't like Moonlite's banana pudding, maybe there's something going on with your tastebuds that you need to get checked out. Take care, TJ

I have to pass on the BBQ. I think Moonlight is terrible, but to each his own. I also recommend Uncle Lee's. The thirty-five mile drive is worth the effort...at least it was the last time I was there (about 4 years ago). I'm not aware of any cabins in Owensboro, but there are lots of hotels around US 60 bypass. Of course, they are all in town. For dining in Owensboro, I'd recommend the Roadhouse on Frederica St. It is right across the street from a Super 8, Best Western, and a couple others. You will appreciate the decor if you're into sports or Nascar at all.
