.44mag and .45 ACP

I have a pistol-caliber bolt-action rifle project underway but I am comparing two calibers which my rifle will be build in : .44mag and .45 ACP

I would like to hear comparisons of their reloading costs, factory ammo costs, and accuracy potential (Most .44 jacketed bullets are hollowpoints, does it limit the .44's accuracy potential? I have yet to find an FMJ .44 bullet.)

Thanks

The 45 auto is the best fighting pistol caliber out there, but underpowered in a carbine. Trajecory will be anything but flat, and you will have to hold over what you're shooting at, possibly before you get out to 100 yards.

The 44 magnum would be my choice... if I were choosing between the two.

What are you shooting at?

Just why are you worried about extreme accuracy with either cartridge? They were both designed as handgun cartridges, and they both work in carbine length shoulder arms...but let's face it, the .44 does have the speed advantage.

As for a FMJ bullet in .44 Mag, have you ever heard of a company named Hornady? They make a 240 grain FMJ bullet.

If you are worried about the cost differential between the two calibers in both factory ammo and in reloading expenses, you should not be doing what you are trying to tell us you are doing...

HenryC470,

The rifle will mainly be used on paper, but here at one of our shooting range we have an annual pumpkin shoot after Holloween, looking forward to use the hollowpoint

Ricciardelli,

Thanks for the Hornady bullet tip. Well, modification of rifle is a one-time-only expense, but ammo/reloading is not...

I really don't understand your dilemna. If you're reloading and are concerned about costs, why not just shoot cast bullets and low powder charges? That way you will spend about the same on either caliber. If you're reloading, why are you concerned about factory ammo in the first place?

The .44 Mag is a much better rifle choice, as you can stoke it up a lot hotter for your pumpkin shoots.

I shoot hard cast LazerCast lead 240 gr SWC in my 44 mag at maximum velocities -- 1450 fps according to my chrono.

Silhouette shooters run lead bullet 44 mag loads out to targets at 200 yards.

Fouling is not serious. Shooting is reasonably priced. Beats the pants off a 45 ACP, which is a handgun round for short ranges.

In a rifle the 44 mag is the hands down winner.

In a handgun there are different criteria, but not in a long arm.

A wise choice. The .45 would have been cheaper due to the availibility of everything and much smaller powder charges. And it would have been a fascinating rifle; however, I think the poor trajectory would have driven you crazy.

Obviously the .44 will be faster and flatter and much more versatile, although still very range limited.

I think both cartridges have the potential for good accuracy, although it may take some tinkering to find it...especially in the .44.

Anyway, this will be an interesting project for you. Keep us posted.

As a great lover of the .45 ACP, I would never consider making a rifle to shoot this round. It just doesn't offer enough for a long gun. But, the .44 Maggie is a rimmed case, and will be more subject to malfunctions in a bolt-action. If you want a .45 in a bolt gun, why not consider one of the shortened .458 Win. wildcats like the .45X1.5" Barnes or .45X2" Barnes, or perhaps the .450 Marlin?

Don't tell that to Thompson or the US Government!
