I should have paid more attention while I was at Sportsman's Warehouse. I have a bad case of the ICK. Didn't think to check. I bought a box of 180gr TSX bullets to try in my Howaby 300 WBY. I wanted to get a pound of RL-25. Seems that there are a few other guys already on the magnumb bandwagon. No RL-25 available. I am stuck using my supply of H4831SC for my initial load testing/goofing off and hard drive ventialtion sessions. They had Barnes manual #3. I got range of 75-80 gr of H4831SC for the uncoated X bullet. So I guess I should try something in the 75-77gr to start and have the chrono handy for the TSX. The propaganda from the Barnes site suggests working up in .5gr steps until pressure signs appear. Considering the price of these bullets, I hope to get a decent load or two in the minimum amount of shots. Barnes needs to include a loan application in the box. Now what I forgot to note is, do I need to use a magnum primer with H4831SC and the TSX? When SW get some more RL-25 in stock, I'll be switching to that powder. Thanks ZM

Zeke, I would definitely recommend using a magnum primer in your 300 Weatherby Mag. The Fed 215 or 215M would be my first choices. The 300 Wby Mag is a big case and even H4831 is pretty slow powder, a big fire behind it is a good idea. In regard to the Rl 25, it is a good powder but I do not imagine it will do all that much better than H 4831 or RL 22 in this particular application. R Flowers

The Barnes No. 2 manual has the CCI 250 as the primer to use. It has the 180grn XFB & the XBT ,there load with H4831 is 75grns @ 2838 to 80 grns @ 3027

Good advice from R Flowers. i use/load 180TSXs for my 300 Weatherbies and I use 80gr of H-4831 using Rem nickel plated brass and Fed 215M primers. Super accurate load, not as fast as factory ( around 3150fps). jorge USN (ret) DRSS Verney-Carron 450NE Cogswell & Harrison 375 Fl NE Sabatti Big Five 375 FL Magnum NE DSC Life Member NRA Life Member

I've done a considerable amount of loading for the 300 wby. From my experience there are 2 really big factors here. Does the rifle have as much freebore as a normal weatherby...if not plan on cutting back the load 2-3 grains. AND are you using weatherby cases...if using rem cases plan on cutting back another 2-3 grains. The tsx doesn't seem to have the same pressure problems the older barnes bullets had----I work with the same loads as other bullets of the same weight but again....your idea to "work up" is good and you very likely might find a real accurate load before you hit max anyhow. (I'd give up 100fps for accuracy any day!!)

The Howaby has considerable freebore. I tried to reach the lands with a dummy round. It is possible but not practical. Tha mag box limits the OAL to 3.575. Between the short magazine and the considerable freebore in the Howaby action. I can run regular 300Wby load data. I spent the big bucks and got Weatherby cases. Not trying to get max velocity. Want a good accurate load. ZM

Zeke - I use 88.0 gr RL 25 in my 26in barreled M-70. Weatherby cases, Fed 215 Mag primers, 180 gr TSX, OAL just about as long as the mag box will allow - 3.590 in this case. Velocity isn't spectacular - around 3150 fps. Accuracy is outstanding, averages well under an inch with some groups in the .3 range. Doug

The TSX will shoot better if it is .05 to .07 off the lands. You may find the max load between the max on the x bullet and the max on the xlc. Go to the Barnes web site and they have instructions for loading the TSX. Those rings are not for crimping. Good Luck
