| I have used rl-19 and rl-17 with 180smks and the speed was about 3100fps or so.Imr4350 will work also. |

| I would recommend somewhat slower powders than Plainsman. Try IMR 7828 or RL-25 for optimum results.
With either of these bullets (both being monometals and therefore longer than conventional lead core bullets) start very conservatively and keep the ogive from contacting the lands. Work up from your starting point as pressures allow.
Don't be surprised if you run into pressure issues very soon after reaching 3000 fps with either of these long bullets. |

RL-22 has worked superbly for us in more than a 1/2 dozen different 300 Win Mags. Been able to get 3100fps give or take and excellent accuracy in all of them.......................DJ

| RL22 & IMR7828 have consistently given me the best results with 180s in the 300 Winny. |

| barnes calls for more bullet set back check their manuals you may have to reduce powder load. |

| I load for 8 .300 Winny shooters in my Elk hunting party. 76 grains RL-22 with Fed 210M primer. 180 grain North Fork or Nosler Partition or Accubond bullets. If I use the 215M primer we blow the group from tiny to big. Good shooting.

| RL-25 is your brew of the 300 Win Mag with 165 and 180 grainers.

| Just use a 270 Winchester It will work more than fine. ( if you have one ) I have seen Elk killed at that range with a 270 you should be fine with one. It's just a Deer they are not hard to dispatch... |

| My favorite 300 WM load is 83 grs. of Re25. In a 26" barrel I'm getting ~3300 fps with a 180 gr. NAB or NBT. This is MAX. Regards, AIU |

| AIU: My gun topped out at 81 grains of RL-25 for about 3080 fps with a 180 gr. NAB from a 24" barrel. The difference(s) could be in our barrels, chambers, brass, or the lot of RL-25. Just goes to show that every rifle is a rule unto itself.
Come to think of it, if you add about 35 fps for each inch of barrel and 25 fps for each grain of powder, our guns aren't that far apart.
Faster powders than RL-25 definately hit maximum pressures at a lower velocity, however. |

That load isn't MAX it is WAY OVER MAX. It's 3.5grs over the max load listed by Alliant. http://www.alliantpowder.com/r...lid=141&bulletid=136If you want 300 Ultra Mag Velocities why don't you just buy a 300 RUM instead of overloading a 300 WIN Mag?...........................DJ

If it were me I'd load 180gr Accubonds. They are excellent bullets, good BC and excellent terminal performance......................DJ

That's an interesting recipe for RE25. I'm using H4831 at 77.5 grains and have a hard time getting it into the W-W cases with a drop tube. That powder is a log design and I'm sure that is a part of the challenge. I'm not that familiar with RE25. Is it more of a flake/ball type powder? Do you struggle getting 83.0 grains into the case or do you use a drop tube to help? How is the accuracy out of your shooter with that load? |

| Iceman, FWIW, I'm a "work up one good load and use it for everything" kinda guy. If you're keying on 180s, then work up a good load for that bullet and use it for everything you hunt with the .300. Don't think you're helping yourself by going to a lighter bullet because of the smaller game. Just become familar with your rifle shooting the 180s. Check your ballistic tables and you'll see what I mean.

| I use Norma or Lapua brass and have no trouble getting 83 grs of R25 in the case. I've loaded up to 84.5 grains before, but that's over max. I follow primer pocket expansion for judging pressure. I can get at least 3 reloading from cases fired with 83 grs of Re25 behind a 180 gr. NAB - remember the bullet you use is important in high performance reloading.
Alliant has become more conservative. They used to list 82.6 grs of Re25 as max for 180 speer bullets.
Accuracy is great in my gun, but I use a custom made Rem 700 (action trued and faced-up) with an after market barrel (Krieger), sporter contour finished 0.82 inches at the muzzle.

| AIU, Your load is Way to hot. 3300fps should be proof enough to you. You can't go that fast with 180gr bullets in a 300 Win Mag without going over pressures. Developing loads by primer pocket expansion and traditional pressure signs usually results in loads in the 70-75K psi range (according to Ken Oehler). Having a blueprinted custom gun not show pressure signs until well over 70k+ psi is typical and has been documented by ballistics experts. 3 other current manuals that list RL-25 and 180gr bullets the Swift #1 manaul list 79.0 as max, the Speer #14 lists from 79.0 to 79.5 depending on which bullet. The only manual that shows higher is the Lyman #48 which shows 81.0grs giving pressures of 63,200psi but a veloicty of only 3084fps - which is within individual round tolerances of the velocities in other manuals. 2 extra inches of barrel 24-26" doesn't give you 250fps more velocity. Alliant probably backed off the original load for the same reason you did. They probably got the first load by CHE and pressure signs and then lowered it when they actually pressure tested the loads, either that or later lots of RL25 might be a little quicker. Your load is simply too hot, both by checking different manuals top powder charges and by the extreme velocity you've gotten. In loading for the 300 Win mag you should stop when you get to about 3100 with 180gr bullets, much faster is going to be at high pressures. It's foolish to overload a round to get a little extra velocity. Buy a bigger gun if you really need the extra 200fps...................DJ
