this started off as a question about OAL but has got me going a little bit. I tried seating of the lands with my ruger m77 mkIIVT, using 50gr bt's and varget. The OAL was way to long for the magazine, so i loaded individually. My results were far from impressive. This had me thinking though, and all my loads with varget have not been excellent. H380 loads on the other hand have been pretty good. Now im thinking that with the long barrel (26"), that varget may not be the best powder because i may be wrong, it is a faster burning powder than H380 and the longer barrel does not need the fast burning powder. Someone tell me im not an idiot........ so two questions: 1) is fooling with OAL really worth it, 2)is my powder theory even remotely a consideration Auburn University BS '09, DVM '17

I also have a ruger M77v .22-250 with bull barrel...I found mine did NOT like boat tails...I then switched to 55 gr sierra's over 35.5 grains of h4895...very accurate. It is worth fooling with OAL...you can do a search and find several methods for finding a good run out for your rifle. H4895 is actually faster than Varget...I also had good luck with h414...so I think you rifle doesn't like varget for whatever reason. I honestly don't think the 22-250 is that picky about burn rates...seems like the popular medium speed powders work well. Try a flat based bullet with varget and see if you get better results...if not...you can shoot the h380 with your bt's. Good luck.

In my experience the 22-250 isn't too fussy about what it's fed. Like any other rifle, the 22-250 has preferences and will shoot its best when all is right. Because fast doesn't necessairly translate into accurate, it is with top end loads where most problems occur. A word or two about handloads... IMR4895 is always a good choice as is WW748. The modest case size negates use of "magnum" primers and slow-burning powders, but "match" primers and 50 to 55 grain bullets are right at home. A Swift the 22-250 isn't, and the prudent handloader knows that for giving up 50-100f/s, they are rewarded with cases that don't stretch with annoying regularity.

Most the 22-250's i have loaded liked a little jump instead of off the riflings and in most cases the magazine won't allow them to be seated out. I use 2.4 for the col in most of mine. I haven't had one that liked varget. I have used alot of imr 4895. but now my pwders of choice are RL 15 & imr 4064. I have yet to see one that won't shoot a 50 GR V max in front of 36.gr rl 15. i have 1 that like 55 gr v max a little better than the 50's. Good Luck, the 22-250 is a great round!
