the wizz bang super zip fad for me is about over thanks to library of knowledge here in the AR. I have a very good VZ24 in its birth configuration and loaded up the Nosler 200 with 52 grn. of IMR4350 lit by a Fed210 primer housed in a trimmed R-P brass. Avg vel is 2415 fps and is there or could there be anymore more room for improvement? I was hoping for 2500fps but that could very well be but a dream. the expansion ring at the web is .4695" apart from new at .465" after 3 firings so....safe for sure. Ideas?

Roll EyesI have resisted hot roding any of my Mod.98s because I have run into set back in some that I did hot rod in some of my wildcating. In a known hardened action mod. 98 or other I'm positive that with the usable pressures of today that 2500 fps. in the 8mm X 57 is doable, but why? beerroger

I can see no reason why your VZ-24 cannot get you 2500 and even 2600'/sec with either of the 4350 powders

rational point bartsche. I thought my first reloading attempt in a "classic" 98 was rather anemic seeing what Noslers 5th was declaring. This rifle shoots them 200's just fine but I was curious about the norm if you will.

Setback is something I have studied here in the AR enough and "felt" certain this action that vapo likes so much will hold up with 2500 fps-seems like the "magic" number to me. Quickload reports that my load is at 49715 psi approx.@ 3.126" oal.

your correct though in the "modern" commercial 98's that one does not need to feel "worried". I'll be content-I want to do an actual field test with this round at them velocities that I have previously mentioned, should not need a backup gun or pardner with this bullet. beer

I get 2600~2625 fps with 220 gr Sierra game king #2420 bullets with a 27.5" barrel on a 1903 Turk.

2675 fps is higher pressure and must be done right.

I have only tried one powder, but if a guy tried different powders and worked up until the brass grew and then backed off, I am sure he could find a load with safety margin that beats my loads.

Some 8x57 load data: http://www.realguns.com/loads/8x57mmjs.htm

Some factory ammo specs for reference:

I haven't tried working up a load yet for a 195-200 gr bullet in my 8x57. But, I think a little faster powder than IMR-4350 is called for with bullets lighter than 220 grains. I'm going to try RL-15 with the Hornady 195 gr and the Nosler 200 gr Partition but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

BTW: I tried some of the S&B 196 gr SPCE factory ammo (listed in the table above). It's listed as having a factory spec muzzle velocity of 2592 fps. In my Remington Model 700 Classic with a 24" barrel, it averaged a chrono'd muzzle velocity (instrumental) of 2647 fps. That yields an average muzzle energy of 3049 ft lb. Not too shabby!

Remington Model 700 Classic in 8x57JS.
Handload: 220 gr Woodleigh RN, 51.0 grains of IMR-4350
COL: 3.14" Primer: WLR Case: W-W
Chrono'd average velocity: 2402 fps
This load knocks the snot out of Warthogs!! Smiler

The 8x57 has become one of my favorite cartridges. The Germans certainly knew what they were doing when they designed it! thumb

My two cents...

the only reason you can't get more vel with IMR 4350 and 200 gr bullets in 8mm mauser is case capacity.... Big Grin

nice tusker BFaucett!

bolt face to lands measures with the 200 Partition 3.182". I loaded 53 grn. IMR 4350 seated out to 3.180" and now avg. 2441 fps, ES 22, SD 8- I am compressing the powder the last couple of grains.

As you mentioned with lighter than 220 to use a faster powder. Have a couple of jugs of RL 15 and some 45 more bullets - enough to get by for a short time. More bullets on the way, Midway likes the "lettuce" I send them beer

Have to try that 220 Woodleigh out soon.

It is a nice shooting iron! thumb

a fella I was talking with mentioned he buys quite abit of the Turk 196grn. ammo for his 1903 Turk and has chrony'd the round at and abit above 2700fps. Them Mausers - sure could take it.

The AR - the best damn forum there is!
