i remember reading articles in several of the rags that gave jack's load as 60grns of h4831 under the 130grn bullet in the .270. i use that load in my .270 and depending on the case it is, or damn near a compressed load. unless the surplus was of different density i think he would have been hard pressed to get 62 grains in a .270 case of any manufacture. jm.02

Frankly, I still don't know how Jack got 62 grains of the "old" H4831 into a .270 case. I think it requires more than just a drop tube.....

Funny. I've wondered the same thing, myself.

One should not be afraid to load 30 grains of powder and compress it with a brass rod and load another 30 grains and again compress it and continue to load more powder.....

As long as you work up to it....you'd be surprised how spectacular IMR4831 can be in a .270 case and how much you can put in!!

I've not loaded H4831 in a .270 but would not hesitate to super compress the powder as long as it was a "developed" load.

Children, your too young to challange old Jack with old powders...I still have about 40 lbs. of that old H4831 AKA 4350 Data powder. It is like gold to me... I have loaded Jacks 62 gr. load in once fired WW cases for 3217 FPS Average for 10 shots in a 22" barrel. Got about the same in Remington cases with 1.5 grs. less...for what its worth..

I sold my 270 as I got bored with it after many years but I have always horded that powder because someday I will get another .270..In the meantime I find it about the best thing since sliced white bread in my 300 H&H and I can break the 3000 plus FPS sound barrier with the 180 gr. Nosler with ease and low pressure, and get an easy 2900 plus a tad with the 200 gr. Nosler, now thats sizzles....

Thats yo daddys powder and it works...

I have to side with Atkinson on this issue, I put 63 gr plus of H4831 in my 30-06 all the time. Just weigh each load and then dispense slowly into the edge of the powder funnel, so that the powder swirls like a flushing toilet. Using this technique, I have never needed a drop tube.

That's one thing nice about H4831 and the 06 case, you can't really get enough in the case to cause any serious problems. But thats with bullets, not phazers or lazers.....

I used to load 61 grains of "old" 4831 behind Sierra's 190 grain Match King in 30-06 for 1000 yard matches. This was in military cases which have a grain or two less capacity than commercial cases. But I think this might be too hot a load with "modern" H4831. Definitely too hot with IMR4831.
