Hi,

i would like to reload my Sauer 80 300Weatherby with Sierra Game King 180grains and Hogdon powder, i think i got 4830 at home. Has anyone some realoding data for me? Cant find any on the net. Really curious, even not the manufacturer does mail me back.
What i am looking for is a nice soft shooting bullet, with which i can shoot on little fellow deer/without wasting too much meat)- real close, like 100yards, so no big hitter.
thanks for helping me out,
yours,
Marcel

The 165 grain game king will out preform the 180 grain and 4831 is a excellent powder for the 300 whby. Normally the 300 cartridge likes hot loads. Sierra Manual from 1971 shows a load with the 165 grain and 4831 at 85.4 grains of powder. New 4831 will have a little different burn rate so start out lower and work up while watching your primers to see how they flatten out. Depending on your chamber you can go more or less powder but the important thing is the accuracy. Good Luck

Try http://stevespages.com/page8.htm
for your starting data.

A starting load SHOULD BE AT LEAST 10% below the MAX.

You work up a load for your gun by starting with A LOAD 10% BELOW MAX, and increasing one grain at a time, until your rifle is providing the accuracy you want. If you get good accuracy before you encounter pressure problems, STOP AT THAT POWDER WEIGHT!! Make sure to look out for obvious signs of excessive pressure (HARD BOLT LIFT, EJECTOR MARKS ON THE CARTRIDGE HEAD, ETC.) as you increase the powder charge, AND STOP INCREASING THE CHARGE IF YOU ENCOUNTER ANY OF THESE SIGNS. IF YOU DO GET ANY SIGNS OF TOO-HIGH PRESSURE, DROP BACK AT LEAST THREE GRAINS!!

One danger to be aware of: LARGE CAPACITY CARTRIDGES, LIKE THE .300 WEATHERBY, HAVE BEEN KNOWN TO HAVE SERIOUS EXCESSIVE PRESSURE PROBLEMS WITH GREATLY REDUCED LOADS OF SLOW-BURNING POWDERS LIKE H4831. IN THIS CASE, NEVER LOAD LESS THAN THE MINIMUM CHARGE GIVEN in whatever loading data source you are using!!!

Never had any problem with Hodgdon, but this is from their website, may be for specifics on the bullet, you can go to Sierra's site.

Harley,

I also found a listing from Hodgens web site for the 220 grain Hornady RN bullet and the Retumbo powder 84.0 grains max, v=2853, 54,000 cup, and col=3.565" This goes with the info that GreyGhost gave you.

I have tried using IMR 7828 but couldn't pack enough of it in the case with the 180's to get the velocity up. Accuracy wasn't any better than about 2" groups at 100 also. On my Weatherby I have been using factory stuff and reloading my 300 win. The weatherby just seems to be real hard to get a good load in. Real picky anyway. I haven't tried in a couple of years though and may try it again here. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Charlie, that's interesting. IMR 7828 has consistently been the best performer in my .300 Weatherby, both from an accuracy and velocity standpoint. Just about any 180gr. bullet shoots well in my gun when I'm using 7828 and at 85 grs. I'm in the neighborhood of 3250 fps. My rifle is a Sako 75 with 26" barrel.

Hi guys,

thanks for all your help, i might have found what i am looking for, i will see when ray buck hunt starts in 3 weeks. [Razz]
Cause i live in Germany, we usually hunt on smaller game like ray bucks and one year old hogs. With my Steyr 300WinMag i did made a really hot hole last December, and i dont want to overspam that which thr 300Weatherby i own right now.
thanks a lot, guys, i really do appreciate, caue over here, nearly no one shoots this caliber instead of 8x68S(which is almost the same) or 9,3x74R or 9,3x62,
i will let you know how it had worked, when seeing how big holes i will get then,
yours,
Marcel

Marcel, when I get my Weatherby put back together. I'm going to be trying to work up a load using the 200 gr. Nosler Accubonds with Hodgdon's H-4831 starting @70grs., and H-4350 starting @64grs., might even try some of the H-1000 starting @76grs. but won't go into a compressed load. If I can get good accuracy at 2850 or there abouts I'll be happy.

I am another one who has gotten the best accuracy and velocity with IMR-7828 and 180 gr bullets. While my loads for my friend's rifle are 85.0 gr, my rifle shows pressure signs at that level and likes 82.5 gr of IMR-7828. Both are custom rifles, so the freebore is undoubtedly different between them.

Hi,

thanks for all your help. I reloaded tonight and i took the following:

Speer Spitzer 180grains
Hogdon 4831 75grains (at 79grains max.load)
Starter CIC Magnum
cardridge overall lenghts: 3.560in

On Saturday i probably will be on the shooting range and see, how accurate hey are. How they work on ray bucks, i will see in 3 weeks, hopefully not making to much damga inside,

thanks friends, i really apreciated your helps and tipps, without life is much harder,
yours,
Marcel

Keep on hunting!

Try IMR7828 powder it is Great for the 300Wby... In "MY" rifle I use 85.0grs with a 180gr Nosler Ballistic Tip or Partition bullet with Federal 215 primer and get 3,240fps.. accuracy is very good also.

Good Luck!!!
