I have a silly itch and want to try some round nose bullets in the '06. I was kind of hoping that someone would make 165's but it looks like it's either 150 or 180. Would be for close up whitetail hunting in wis----anyone have any input??

Don, You know, I hate them round nose bullets. You want them cause they open up faster, or what? You know what the SSTs do. They look so much nicer, anyway. Jay

I've hunted the wisconsin woods near the chippewa falls area for about 25 years and I can assure you that the big ones all escaped to Minnesota where no one can shoot worth a shit. That said I'd pick Hornady over Sierra for hunting bullets any day and as to the weight either the 150 or 180 will do fine. I personally would pick the 180 because it's better for cutting down Christmas trees in the woods. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." kraky I load for a guy who insists on the 180gr Hornady RN in his '06. Bang-flops are the norm. WN Fill your boots, man!

I'd go with the 180s first.. but in a 308, and in WiZconsin....the 150s would be fine... I actually prefer a round nose any day... of course if I could buy a new 1950 Chevy pick up, I'd be driving one of those probably.. If not daily, I'd own one! I don't know why round noses look funny on a short action tho.. I have used both hornady and sierra's... Both perform excellently.. If I had to make a pick, I'd go with Hornady.. strictly because at least they put the time in QC to polish their bullets.. I don't know how many boxes of Sierra hunting bullets I have gotten that looked like they had been sitting in the floor of someone's backseat for ten years... fresh out of a newly opened box...I also think the Hornady performs better, but that difference is not going to make or break a hunt.. I'd load a Sierra 180 grain RN before I'd load a Hornady 180 grain SP...I just prefer the RN.... cheers seafire ( and his 1950 Chevy Pickup!)

VD Yup, the deer around here are really small so those 180's are probably overkill. WN Fill your boots, man!

In all seriousness there was a guy with a whole lot of time on his hands and he spent a ton of time shooting 30 cal bullets into wet medium of some type and then posted photos of the results. Further he did so at different velocities. What he discovered was a little embarrasing to some bullet companies. Essentially he somewhat proved the value of premium bullets but also found that the typical round nose bullet acted much like a premium bullet in his tests. Does someone know where that data is? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Seafire doesn't need no stinking data..... Seafire already found that out a long time ago.... but tell that to the guy with his new 400 Weatherby and his $3.00 each premium bullets! Sure it looses range quicker.. but it gives better on game performance.... I just was looking thru a catalog that talked about some 60 grain 22 Long Rifle ammo that claims to have penetrated 24 inches of ballistic gell with a subsonic speed!!!!at 50 yds.... Slow but deadly, those heavy but round nose bullets.. guess you'd qualify 22 bullets as round noses, based on all the tubular magazines in 22 rifles.... cheers seafire

It was at http://www.seahook.com/bestbullet.jpg It is a LARGE Chart, so use the biggest moniter you have access to. As you look at it, check the Remington Round Nose. I'd suspect it is the one Vapodog is talking about. It is the very best and most comprehensive Bullet Test I've ever seen available for civilian eyes. The best thing about it though, is that once you have 24-25 kills with any bullet on Mr. Sciuchetti's Test Report, you will realize just how close to reality his pictures are.

Hornady. Their 150 gr offering is intended for 30-30 velocities however, so load accordingly or use the 180 for the -06. Don't think I'd want to push the 150s much above 2500 fps. If yuro'e corseseyd and dsyelixc can you siltl raed oaky?

I've used the 180 gr. Sierra RN off and on for years loaded max in my .308. Ever deer, and Nevada Mule deer can get big, were bang flops. My ex-brother in law was a firm believer in round nosed bullets, period. To paraphrase W.D.M. Bell's comment, "Never did a spitzer bullet ever pollute my rifles perfect barrel." I haven't seen him in over 25 years or more, but I'd bet money he hasn't changed his mind. Paul B.

Hot Core....that's the one and thanks....however it's so large that it takes all day to download to my dialup system. Anyone that don't believe in round nose performance is missing the boat according to this. If ranges are not to exceed 200 yards the round nose is definitely worth the money. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." For shorter ranges you can't beat the Round Nose for a great killing bullet. I use them in practically everything bar varmint guns & lever actions which get even better tissue destroyers................flat noses.

Some of the most accurate 30-06 factory ammo I've ever shot is the 180-gr. Remington CoreLokt RN. Cheap, too. Okie John "The 30-06 works. Period." --Finn Aagaard

Hey Vapodog, You're welcome. I've got one of the actual Charts. I can spend a few minutes looking at it and then wander off to think about all the great input. But, I normally spend an hour or so at a time just looking at how close to reality the bullet Expansion, Weight Retention and Penetration are to what I've seen with similar bullets on Bears, Deer and Hogs. Just amazing. The Charts were still $15 when I got mine and that includes Shipping in a nice heavy cardboard tube. Best $15 I'd spent in a long time back then. gsciuchetti@yahoo.com Gary D.
