Can a safe +P load actually push a Hornady 45 Colt 250 gr HP XTP too fast? I have load data that pushes them up to 1400 fps. If I hit a deer from tree stand distance (5 - 20 yards) do I run the risk of the bullet falling apart before reaching the vitals?

Hornady 9th edition lists a muzzle velocity range of 800-1600 fps for that bullet. LWD

Not going to do it out of a 45 colt. I shoot them out of my muzzle loader at 1950 and they kill deer well.

45 Colt from a 10 " barrel using 25 grains of H110 nets just over 1365 fps. The same load can be used in the Ruger Blackhawk and other well made revolvers. Don't try this in your S&W. Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

To answer your question, I think it will penetrate just fine. If you are concerned the 240 gr XTP MAG is designed for 454 velocities.
