I'm in the process of rebarreling a M700 from a 24"rechambered factory barrel to a Shilen 26" stainless
match barrel. I've used H870 and H1000 in the old barrel and was never satisified with the accuracy and
velocity. What other powders/starting charge weights would you recommend trying for bullets in the 140/160 range.

H5010 worked well for me before I rebarreled. I have not done much load development with the new Douglas barrel. H1000 is to fast for 160's you won't reach their potential speed. But it did shoot well for me with 140's (3550 fps). I'm thinking Retumbo may be a good burn rate haven't tried it yet.

The most satisfactory, and by far the cheapest, powder for the 7 STW that I've found is surplus WC 872. Not knowing your gun, I won't recommend a powder weight, but it takes a full or near-full case with most weights of bullets from 140-up. Start with H-870 maximum load data (which will be fairly conservative) and work up from there. Use caution, however, as I can't say how consistent in burning speeds the various lots of surplus WC 872 may be. Some are from pulled rounds and some are virgin.

Theoretically, WC-860 should be a good powder, but my results have not been as good as with WC 872.

H1000 worked well for me in my 26" McMillan bebarreled Ruger #1. I used 8mm Rem brass, Fed #215 primers and 80 gr of H1000 behind the 160 gr Barnes "X" and got 3330 fps. The same load gave no pressure signs and also very tight groups with the 168 gr Sierra Match King for target work.

I must mention that my cartridges gave around 200 fps lower speed in my friends STW who had only recut the chamber in his 7mm Rem. No.1. Obviously the tighter and more uniform McMillan barrel gave also better velocity. However, this was in 1993 and todays Ruger barrels now from their own manufacture are said to be a lot better.

Despite you are convinced that H1000 is too fast for the 160 grainers in the STW I think it would be better suited to a 24" barrel than a slower powder, giving less muzzle blast and most likely at least the same speed.

I have also tried 7828 which did not better the H1000 and also H870 (both with 160-grainers). The 870 gave lower velocity, pressure signs and a v e r y dirty barrel. I had some old H5010 at hand but unfortunateley not enough, and by the time it became unavailable in Europe for some time.

Today I would also try two powders form Kemira (Vihtavuori)(24N41 and 20N29) but probably not in a 24" barrel.

Good hunting

W. Wilson: MRP is very close to RL-22 (some people claim that RL-22 is simply powder made by the same manufacturer to the same specs as old MRP). At any rate, I would be reasonbly comfortable using STARTING data for RL-22 with my MRP.

Years ago, I had two different batches of MRP which were quite different in burning rate--a problem that many have noted in RL-22. So be cautious with this powder. BTW, I don't think you'll find it useful for any bullet over 140 grains in the 7 STW.

I have used RL22 & IMR 7828 & 160gr NP in my 7mm Dakota (sim. case capacity) w/ good results (3250fps from a 26"bbl). If you wnt to try a slower powder, give AA8700 a try. I get good accuracy w/ it in my 7mm dak. but velocity is higher w/ RL22/7828. RL25 would also be worth trying. Good luck, I think you are on the right track w/ 160gr bullets in the big 7's.

I have tried all of the above powders and got good accuracy from just aqbout all. The powder I finally settled on is re25. Here is the results from my last at the range.
re25=81gr,150nos. bt=3409,3384,3421
" " " =3445,3459,3451
" 81gr 160par =3390,3380,3385
" 80gr 175par =3318,3313,3314
I use win. WLR primers. This is from a mauser action, with a 27" Douglas air gauge barrel. Always remember to start low and work up. Hope this, with everyone else's post helps. fws

I second the choice on RL-25. My results were similar to Toto's. I have two friends who use RL-25 exclusively to push 160s at 3400fps out their 28"bbls. MtnHtr

My 7mm STW likes one load. 85 grains of H-1000 and a Fed 215 primer with a 160 gr. Barnes XLC bullet. Average fps 3100. I have tried dozens of other combinations of powders and bullets, I always come back to this one because of it's accuraacy. Good shooting. [Wink]

150g Noslers, H4831SC, Fed 215M is the ticket for my 700 vssf. loads may vary of course but seems to like warm to hot loads best.

RL25 works better then anything else I've tried so far. 79 gr will give me 3100 fps in a 24" barrel with a 175 gr bullet (either Sierra or Nosler). - Dan
