Joe You could do it but it is a lot of work. Why wouldn't you use a case that is easier & cheaper to get such as 7mm rem.At least you don't have to shorten them.Or try getting 270 or 7mm WBY cases and neck them down. By the time you do all this work and fire form your cases I can't see where you will save any money.Have you checked prices at some of the mail order places (Graffs,Midway,Ole western scrounger).

Snowman I was just sort of brainstorming. I am not married to the idea of using 300 WBY as the parent cartridge, if 7mm Rem will work, that would be good too. The whole deal is I am thinking of a 257 Wby as my next rifle, I like the specs on the ballistic tables, but the cheapest brass I can find is 1 dollar a case. Some of the other rounds can be had for much less. I don't think I would mind fireforming, although I have never done it, but I have had it demonstrated to me from a man that had a Mauser 98 chambered for something called 358 Hawk. Which brings me back to my original question, does anybody know how to get 257 Wby out of a "commercial" case? To me, the Wby Mags, except the 300 are "proprietary". They live in that never-never land between a genuine wildcat and a truly commercial round. I feel the same about Lazzeroni, Dakota, and Arnold rounds. ------------------

Joe $ 1 a case is not that bad if you are getting the Wby case. They are strong and last for many reloads.Sure you can buy 7mm rem cases for less than 1/2 that price BUT you have to resize them and in doing so you may collapse a few shoulders and ruin those cases. Now you have to prime that case charge it with powder and seat a bullet on it and shoot it to get a perfect fireformed case.Add that all up and you will find the cost of your "cheaper" brass may be getting closer to $1 a case than you think! It is a lot easier to resize 270 Wby or & mm Wby cases as they already have the radius shoulder. Rem made 7mm wby brass and I believe Federal is making 257,270,7mm,300 & 340 Wby ammo.I'm not sure if they are offering empty brass at this time.It may be better you buy loaded Federal ammo to start. As the 257 Wby is a little harder on barrels than some smaller capacity cases i would try to keep the number of fireforming rounds I fire to a minimum and save that barrel for hunting.

Grafs has 257 WBY for $89/100 and 300 WBY for $76. For that little difference I sure wouldn't fool with making it. If you really want to save money simply use 7mm Rem Mag neck it down and fireform. But, you are still only looking at saving $20-30/100. Spread it over the life of the brass and it doesn't seem worth it. Not to mention the issue of the head stamp not matching.

Hello, Yes, the 1 dollar price is for the Wby case, from Midway. Did not know Federal was making loaded rounds, I have used thier brass in my 30-06 for years.

Cases for "the right price" is not easy to find. Take a look at sinclair international, they are one of a few agents for Norma. The delivery time is often fast and they have alot on the shelf, no waiting. Sorry about this, I read this so late. I had 400 new Norma cases in 257WBY, but they are alredy gone. price was 50 cents a case. I have also tried to use 7mm rem and it worked fine.Sincalir sells cases by 100 for a better price.
