I would like to purchase some dies to reload my 500 Jeffery. I have posted this and already received one negative response. Dave at CH4 seems very reasonable at least via Email. Does anyone have any feedback on these guys. The CH4 Dies are $169 and everyone else wants +$400.

Thanks

the three sets I have purchased over the last two years all FL size ammunition that chambers in the particular rifles and do not excessively resize the brass.

A buddy of mine bought a set for the obscure French 6.5 x 53.5 Daudeteau from CH4 D and is very satisfied with them.

They are not the prettiest on the exterior, but the interiors -- what actually counts -- are good quality. I've had no problems with them.

I, too, have read negative posts on them but my .404 Jeffery dies from them are just fine....they work as I expected.....no complaints.

Ditto on the .404 dies, mine work great.

I purchased a set of .500 A2 dies from them this last week. Shipping was prompt, service was helpful and informative, and, so far, the dies seem to be fine.

Both sets of CH4D that I've tried could not be made to work at all, period. One of the worst products I've ever used. Spend the extra money for RCBS or others - they're worth every dime extra you'll spend over the cost of CH.

Have dies in .470 NE and .458 AR from CH4D. Had to spin the .470 dies in a lathe to clean out the edges of the bores for threading.

After the cleanup, the dies make fine ammo. No problems at all.

Call the proprietor of C-H. I think his name is Mike. Ask him what size the neck diameter of the die will be. See if agree with his number.
I have C-H dies that work fine but they tend to size the neck more than I like.
Bear in mind that all C-H dies were not made under the current ownership. If you have some really old dies they may have been made by previous owners.

My 500J CH4D dies had the seater sized for .505" bullets. There is absolutley no reason for that to happen, and my thoughts were if they couldn't get it right the first time, they'd likely screw it up fixing it. Since I have a lathe I just bored it out and honed it to size. But you shouldn't have to do that to a (at then) $140 set of dies.

I think RCBS products are so/so, and their custom dies overpriced. That said, I've yet to have any RCBS dies that didn't work right out of the box.

I have a set in 50 alaskan. I have been pleased with the ammo they turn out. The cost was a nice bonus-- paid $90.00 for the set vs $235.00 at the time for RCBS.

I use C-H/4D dies to load for my pair of .405 Winchesters, and they work excellently.

There is another option if you have access to a lathe. You can either buy or make a set of die blanks (I make my own these days). Then, you can buy a custom die reamer from just about any reamer maker for MUCH less than $400, and make your own dies. Or have a friendly local machine shop or gunsmith make the die with your blank and reamer.

Then, you can sell the reamer in an on-line auction to recoup much of the cost.

In my not too humble opinion, this latter option beats the heck out of getting yourself reamed by some of the other die manufacturers.

(But then, what the heck do I know?)

Brad,

I have a set of CH4D dies for my 400 Whelen Improved.

They are kind of mediocre. No vent hole for air, so I am always getting oil dents, or I use too little lube and the case gets stuck.

For about the same price (or less) Lee Precision will make dies for you for your 500 Jeffery. That's what I'm doing for my 500 Jeff.

Also have their lathe-type case trimmer with dies, and bushing neck sizers for my small and large cases.
I make a call, my dies come in a week later. I need a part, I call, it shows up a week later. If you want, you can talk to the owner.
I haven't had any problems with my dies at all.

My two sets of them work just fine.. I prefer them over Hornady Dies any day....

An interesting note, is that they are the only manufacturer that makes a Rosette Crimp Die....

That is for making blanks like the military use to do... for a while, I was loading up blanks for my father in Laws, VFW post back in Minnesota.. since they didn't want to give up there M1As for Funeral Duty....

CH 4D actually sent me two, when I only ordered one.. so I ended up sending that to a fellow forum member on here for a VFW post in Albany MN....

CIP finaly settled on a set of standard specs in 2000. At the time (2003) I bought dies, Dave at CH was the only mfg. that seemed to understand that there even were standards..RCBS.JGS, Clymer all seemed to have their own dimension ideas...the perfect match and to CIP sandards were Pacific for the reamer and CH for the dies. Horneber brass was still off on the shoulder angle..haven't tried other brass, but appreciate any feed back
