Anybody have any pet loads for the .358 Win using the Speer 220gr fn bullet? I've been loading the Sierra 225 with 48.5 gr of Win 748..that's a max load in the Nosler book, yet seem's quite mild in my SAKO rifle. Any experience with this bullet on elk class game? And what rifle do you use? Thx in advance. BT Elk, it's what's for dinner..

I've used this 220 Speer, and it IS TOO SOFT for Elk, use a tougher bulelt. Works fine for Deer, but thats all. Remember, forgivness is easier to get than permission.

Terry, Why do you feel it's too soft? Details if you can. I used the Sierra 225 on a spike bull and it separated jacket from core. It will kill well, but can cause issues if not placed properly. The hunt will be for cow elk and we should be able to be picky about the shot and the range. Thx, BT Elk, it's what's for dinner..

Hey BT, I've never shot an Elk, but have used both of the bullets you mentioned on Deer and Hogs. From that, I'd agree with Terry. Nosler makes a 225gr Partition (Part# 44800) that you "should" be able to run through an Elk's shoulders, or anywhere else in the front 1/3 of it's body and have excellent results. You will still need to Develop the Load from below for the Partition, but with a bit of luck, it might be close enough to either of your other Loads that you can practice with them and use the Partitions for the Hunts. Any of those Bullets will work well on Deer, but I usually select the 200gr Hornady SP for Deer size Game. It is tougher than the Speers or the Sierras that I've used, so I like to keep it in the Deer, Hog and Black Bear "shoulders". I've used 35Rems, 358Wins, 35Whe and currently a 350RemMag. Nothing at all wrong with the 358Win, it is one of the best balanced Cartridges ever Designed. Good Hunting and clean 1-shot Kills.
